Green card Visa

Regardless, the man is a monk. He will only make positive contributions to the country. To deny him residency just seems to arbitrary and unnecessary. Why not let the man remain and continue to do his good work?

This story makes for a good headline, but the truth is that certian visas require you to practice within a given religion and maintain that position. SO, in some very limited cases, you can be denied a green card over a switch of religions.
