  2. Dec 2 - House Democrats Are Santa

    -----------------IMMIGRATION DAILY FROM ILW.COM------------------

    December 2, 2010

    http://www.ilw.com/immigrationdaily/digest/2010,1202.shtm

    ITEMS

    1. Comment: House Democrats Are Santa - From the ever-insightful

    Micheal Hill:

    http://micevhill.com/

"House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) pledged on

Wednesday that the House of Representatives will take up the

DREAM Act during the Lame Duck Session ... and that it would do

so regardless of whether the Senate first takes up the measure

... Hoyer's comments were made late on Wednesday, December [1],

in a brief session with reporters ... the pledge was significant

... in that it was made as efforts in the Senate to bring up the

DREAM Act were sustaining one procedural and political setback

after another ... When asked on Wednesday whether Democrats had

the requisite 218 votes that would be needed to pass the DREAM

Act, Hoyer replied, "I think we would have the votes when we

    bring it to the floor."

We commend the House Democratic leadership for finally pledging

to bring immigration benefits to the floor of the 111th House

where the Democratic Party still has a historic majority, and

where there is still hope for the Democrats to live up to their

promise to immigrants. House passage of DREAM would build

momentum for action in the Senate, where legislative business has

ground to a halt over the impasse on budget/taxes, and where the

calendar is jammed with many other urgent matters (to say nothing

of the fact that the minority's power in the Senate is always

considerable). For the latest whip count, see Markos Moulitsas of

    DailyKos on DREAM.

    http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2010/12/2/924907/-DREAM-Act-gets-watered-down,-and-latest-whip-count

While there is hope in the air for DREAM, the last 20 votes for

any contentious House bill are always difficult. That's where the

awesome and proven whipping ability of Speaker Pelosi and her

leadership team can make a difference, as can a nudge or two

applied by the White House; we trust that senior Democrats will

go all out to make DREAM happen now.For years, a small handful of

anti-immigrants have fooled Congress as to their numbers by

faking zip codes and addresses while making repeated/multiple

calls to members of Congress across the country. The pro-

immigration side is wise to these dirty anti-immigration tricks,

and through grass-roots mobilization, is finally producing

record-breaking call volume urging Congress to do the right thing

for America by enacting DREAM. Calls from the public are critical

in this final stage before a floor vote, we urge our readers to

call 1-866-587-3023 to ask Congress to enact DREAM now.

open to new employment opportunities. If you want to reach this

  4. Nov 30 - American DREAMs

    1. Comment: American DREAMs - A New York Times editorialhttp://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/30/opinion/30tue2.html?ref=opinionstates: "If the Dream Act passes, credit must go to those whohave fought for it most strenuously, at greater personal risk andinconvenience than anyone else: the young people whose futures itwill decide." The battle for the DREAM Act has featuredundocumented immigrants stepping out of the shadows to declarethemselves "undocumented and unafraid." Given the impasse overimmigration law since 9/11, our country has witnessed an unusualphenomenon: a large number of long-time undocumented aliens. Thisgroup has cowered in the shadows, afraid of drawing notice tothemselves. In contrast, the young Americans who would benefit byDREAM have stepped bravely into the light. Without any connectionto the power brokers on the Hill "the DREAMers" have proven thatthey can get their pet bill on the radar of the professionals, and on the Congressional agenda. These youth are Americans, except on paper. They are ready to join our armed forces andprotect our countryhttp://www.letusserve2010.org/home/and are ready to put their college education to work in oureconomy. We welcome the signs by Majority Leader Reid and Speaker Pelosithat they will bring DREAM for a vote in the respective chambers. However, to enact DREAM, all stakeholders need to chip in.Democrats need to reach across the aisle; Republicans need toremember the values that motivated them to co-sponsor the DREAMAct back in 2003; pro-immigrant organizations need to mobilizetheir bases and spend their funding and resources in ways thatcan make a difference in this battle; and finally, Congressionalleaders and President Obama need to fulfill their promises andmake the American dreams of our undocumented youth happen. Toexpress support for DREAM to Congress, call: 866-587-3023.
