  1. Trump Borrows From Hitler's Playbook Against Jews by Scapegoating Latino Immigrants as Criminals and Calling Pelosi an "MS-13 Lover". Roger Algase

In his latest May 29 attack on House Minority Leader Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi as someone who "loves MS-13"

    http://www.newsweek.com/trump-rips-m...e-rally-948609

Donald Trump is using a strategy right out of Adolf Hitler's playbook of dehumanizing and scapegoating the Jews as "criminals" who "stabbed Germany in the back" during WW-1 and were allegedly responsible for all of that country's problems.

To be sure, Trump is not anti-Jewish, does not support genocide or mass murder, and is not an admirer or follower of Hitler or the Nazis. Comparisons between Trump and the German Fuehrer need to be used sparingly and with a great deal of qualification.

But just as Hitler used long standing hatred and prejudice against Germany's tiny Jewish minority, dating back to the Middle Ages, in order to take absolute power in Germany, there are many disturbing signs that Trump is now doing the same thing with Latino, Muslim and black immigrants to accomplish the same goal in America.

Peter Beinart, contributing editor at The Atlantic and associate professor of journalism and political science at City University of New York, writes as follows in that magazine:

"...the Nazi newspaper Der Sturmer ran a feature called 'Letter Box' which published readers accounts of Jewish crimes. When the Nazis took power, the German State did something similar. Frustrated by the failure of most businesses to participate in a boycott of Jewish businesses in April, 1933, Adolf Hitler's government began publicizing Jewish crime statistics as a way of stoking antisemitism.

    https://www.theatlantic.com/politics...-crime/518238/

The lists of alleged Jewish criminals appearing in Der Stuermer, whose publisher, Julius Streicher, was later executed as a Nazi war criminal, were a very dangerous precedent for Trump's VOICE program of publishing lists of crimes (including absurdly trivial ones such as trespassing and, in one case, "Peeping Tom") which arrested Latino and other mainly non-white immigrants has been charged with, even if not convicted of.

While VOICE was soon abandoned, MS-13, which only a tiny percentage of immigrants are connected with and some of whose members are not immigrants at all, but US citizens, appears to be taking its place as one of Trump's handy tools for promoting hatred against non-white immigrants.

    Beinart also explains:

"Trump's allies may believe that sneaking into the United States, or using a fake social security number to get a job, predisposes people t rob, rape or kill. So if Trump's goal is increasing public safety, publishing a list of crimes committed by unauthorized immigrants is irrational. It is like publishing a list of crimes committed by people with red hair.

If, however, Trump's goal is stigmatizing a vulnerable class of people, then publicizing their crimes - and their crimes alone - makes sense. It's a tactic that bigots have used [for] more than a century.

Using crime to incite hatred has a long history in the United States."

    Beinart concludes:

"Trump's defenders might also argue that crime by unauthorized immigrants deserves special attention because, if the US enforced its immigration laws, it wouldn't occur at all. But even if it were possible to entirely prevent illegal entry into the United States...what's the point of publicizing crimes that illegal aliens commit except to incite hatred against them, and those Latinos legally in the United States who get mistaken for them?"

Beinart's above comments do not deal specifically with Trump's use of MS-13. But everything he says about publicizing other crimes allegedly committed by Latino immigrants applies to MS-13 as well.

As Long Island WINS quotes one Latino community organizer who protested against Trump's demagogic, publicity-seeking MS-13 "Roundtable" in that community:

"Long Island has fought against racism for African-Americans. it has fought against prejudice against Catholics, against Jews, so I can tell you that Long Island will overcome the hatred against immigrants."

    https://longislandwins.com/news/long...o-long-island/

Democracy in Germany was not able to withstand Adolf Hitler's stigmatizing and dehumanizing the Jews as "criminals" and subhumans (Untermenschen, in German) who were allegedly responsible for all of Germany's problems. As the Nazi slogan went:

"Die Juden sind unser Unglueck" ("The Jews are our misfortune.")

Will America's democracy be able to survive Donald Trump's relentless attacks on Latino and other non-white immigrants as "criminals," "terrorists" and "stealers of American jobs"?

The example of Nazi Germany, and of many other dictatorships around the world where authoritarian rulers have taken power by exploiting hatred against immigrants or other unpopular minorities, warns us that unless we, as Americans, stand up for immigrant rights and against attempts by Trump and his supporters to use prejudice against Latino and other non-white immigrants for their own purposes, we should not be so sure that our democracy will survive.

  2. African Immigrant Granted French Citizenship For Heroic Child Rescue; Two Arrested in US for Trying to "Deport" Legal Chinese Student. Roger Algase

In immigration notes from around the world, The Guardian reports that an undocumented African immigrant, Mamadou Gassama from Mali, has been granted the promise of French citizenship after having risked his life (or possible deportation from France) by four-stories up a building in Paris in order to save a 4-year old child who had been left dangling from a balcony.

Instead of being deported, Gassama was hailed as a hero and was able to meet with French President Macron, who granted him a medal for "bravery and devotion" along with legal permission to stay in France and a guarantee of fast track citizenship papers.

The paper reports that when Gassama saw that the child was in danger, he did not think twice before immediately taking action to rescue him.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...rescuing-child

Meanwhile, the same paper reports that two US flight instructors have been arrested for allegedly trying to kidnap and "deport" a Chinese pilot training student with a legal F-1 visa who had been sent to the flight school by the Chinese aviation agency, because they thought that the student's English wasn't good enough for him to be able to complete the program successfully.

  3. The people really benefiting from California’s sanctuary laws. By Nolan Rappaport

    © Getty

President Donald Trump declared his opposition to sanctuary policieswhen he signed Executive Order 13768, “Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States,” during his first month in office. It states that to the extent permitted by law, sanctuary jurisdictions that willfully refuse to share immigration information with federal immigration officers will not be eligible to receive federal grants.

Shortly after the order was released, two California localities filed suit in federal district court seeking to halt the implementation of that directive.

This began a dispute between Trump and the State of California over its sanctuary policies that is still going on.

The most recent lawsuit was filed by the Department of Justice. DOJ seeks to enjoin three of California’s sanctuary laws which allegedly reflect a deliberate attempt to obstruct the enforcement of federal immigration law.

One of these laws is SB 54, which, in addition to restricting the sharing of immigration information with federal immigration officers, prohibits the transfer of criminal aliens to federal custody.

If this dispute escalates, the next step may be harboring prosecutions of California officials who are deliberately making it easier for undocumented aliens to remain in the United States illegally, such as the officials responsible for the enactment of California AB 60.

AB 60 required the California Department of Motor Vehicle to issue driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants who can establish state residence. More than a million undocumented aliens have received California driver’s licenses.

Is California really helping undocumented aliens with its sanctuary policies?

A recent report from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) on labor laws that California has enacted to protect unauthorized immigrant workers indicates that many of the aliens who have been attracted to California by its sanctuary policies are being exploited by unscrupulous employers.

  4. Trump's Art of the Big Lie: Blame Democrats for Child Separation, MS-13; Blame Family, Diversity Immigration for Crime and Terrorism. Roger Algase

    Update, May 28, 10:52 am:

Seung Min Kim, one of the best and most perceptive US immigration reporters anywhere, who used to write for POLITICO before she recently joined the Washington Post, has a May 27th WP story on this topic called:

Trump falsely blames Democrats for splitting up families, refueling immigration uproar

Kim's insights in this article (which can be accessed by Google - I do not have a working link) - are well worth reading.

Among other things, Kim refers to one of Trump's "several misleading tweets during the holiday weekend " While she cannot be faulted for being diplomatic, I think it is even more appropriate to call them "Big Lies", for the reasons explained below in my previous comments, which follow:

This comment has been updated and revised as of May 27 at 10:43 pm:

Almost every day brings fresh evidence that immigration policy in the "Trump Era" is based on the strategy of the Big Lie, which has been used with such great success by autocratic rulers from time immemorial and was made famous by, among others, Adolf Hitler. The latest example is a tweet that Trump sent in the evening of May 26 in evident reaction to outrage over his administration's inhumane policy of separating immigrant children from their parents at the US border. See slate.com May 26:

Outrage grows as horror of policy to split children and parents at border becomes clear

    http://slate.com/news-and-politics/2...mes-clear.html

    This is Trump's latest tweet:

"Pressure on the Democrats to end the horrible law that separates children from there [sic - Trump's spelling] parents once they cross the Border into the U.S. Catch and Release, Lottery and Chain must also go with it and we MUST continue building the WALL. DEMOCRATS ARE PROTECTING MS-13 THUGS."

There are so many falsehoods in the above short statement that describing it as just one Big Lie would be inadequate. If the president's claim to be a "genius" has any basis in reality at all, it might be fairly said to be in the area of compressing the largest possible number of untruths into the smallest possible space.

First and foremost, Trump's atrocious policy of separating young children from their parents at the US border has nothing to do with existing law or with the Democrats. To the contrary, this is a policy that was announced by attorney general Jeff Sessions as part of his threat to prosecute illegal border crossers as a deterrent.

This policy is in direct contrast to that of previous administrations, which allowed families caught at the border to stay together while awaiting determination as to their future. See: New York Magazine:

Trump Blames Dems for His Most Horrifying Immigration Policy

    http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer...on-policy.html

Then the same tweet seamlessly moves on to the next Big Lie, namely moving from talking about illegal border crossing to condemning the visa lottery and "chain" migration, (which has now become a term of hatred and contempt used by white supremacists against extended family immigration) - both of which are perfectly legal ways of immigrating which have been used by tens of millions of productive, law-abiding immigrants in the past half century - but whom Trump has constantly tried to link to crime and terrorism without the slightest basis in fact. See. Huffington Post:

    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry...b00dbbcb5ba69a

    See also, Time Magazine:

    http://time.com/5005261/donald-trump...mmigrant-visa/

I will not dwell long on the next Big Lie in this short tweet, namely that work on Trump's Wall needs to "continue". In fact, no work on the Wall has even begun - only repair to some existing fencing.

Finally, we come to the most dangerous and insidious Big Lie in the entire tweet, namely that the Democrats are allegedly protecting MS-13. The implication in this statement is obvious. If the Democrats are "protecting" dangerous criminals, then they must be dangerous criminals themselves, and America would be better off without an opposition party - i.e., we should become a dictatorship, led by the one Supreme Leader who can save this country - not from the Jews, as in Hitler's use of theBig Lie - but from Latino, Muslim, African and other brown immigrants.

My (slightly revised) original comment follows:

A May 25 Washington Post article provides details about the extent to which Donald Trump is so focused on making venomous attacks against Latino immigrants, whom studies who actually have a lower crime rate then native-born US citizens, in order to boost his popularity and shore up his anti-immigrant base, that Trump's chief immigration advisor, Stephen Miller allegedly tried earlier this year to use the tried and true Big Lie strategy made famous as a means to absolute power by Adolf Hitler by having a statement inserted in a DHS report to the effect that the children of immigrants are more likely than US citizens to commit acts of terrorism - even though this statement was totally false!

Finally, DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, whom Trump has reportedly been in open conflict with for her allegedly failing to carry out his anti-immigrant agenda vigorously enough, succeeded in blocking the false statement from being included, as alternet.org, which has a direct link to the Washington Post story, reports. See, May 25:

Stephen Miller Tried to Publicize a Lie So Obvious That Anti-Immigrant DHS Secretary Had to Shut It Down

    https://www.alternet.org/news-amp-po...-secretary-had

The Post reports the incident as follows:

"When Trump's advisers were writing a report on terrorism this year, Miller had a suggestion: Language saying that children of foreign-born nationals were more likely than non-foreign-born nationals to commit acts of terrorism should be inserted into the report and the accompanying press, according to three people with knowledge of his wishes. But Miller's move was opposed by Nielsen and her top aides, these people said. They said such language was nor substantiated in fact and that a report would not go out from her agency claiming such."

If this report is accurate, the implications go beyond appalling. This would mean that the Trump administration is so committed to stirring up fear, hatred and prejudice against Latino, Muslim and other non-white immigrants that no lie is too outrageous to be used as a basis for setting immigration policy. It would mean, in effect, that Stephen Miller is playing the role of Joseph Goebbels in this administration, at least when immigration is involved.

The Post article also reports that at a 2017 meeting with top advisors:

"Trump reminded them the crowds love his rhetoric on immigrants along the campaign trail. Acting as if he were at a rally, he recited a few made-up Hispanic names and described potential crimes they could have committed, such as rape or murder. Then, he said, the crowds would roar when the criminals were thrown out of the country - as they did when he highlighted crimes by illegal immigrants at his rallies, according to a person present at the exchange and another briefed on it later. Miller and Kushner laughed."

Again, if this story is true, it brings back horrifying memories of Julius Streicher, publisher of the Nazi journal Der Stuermer, who ran lists of alleged crimes committed by Jews as part of Hitler's extermination and was later executed as a war criminal.

And this comparison is not made just for rhetorical reasons. Soon after taking office as president, Trump initiated his VOICE program, which involved publishing weekly lists of alleged crimes that mainly Hispanic immigrants had been arrested for or charged with, even if they had not been convicted.

This program was another example of using the Big Lie technique to vilify and stir up hatred against a targeted minority. While the information concerning the arrests and charges (ranging from more serious crimes such as aggravated assault, to everyday ones such as DUI, and even to the most trivial ones trivial ones such as trespassing and in one case, "Peeping Tom"!) was no doubt accurate, the overall purpose of this now abandoned program was to create the impression that immigrants are more likely to commit crimes than native born US citizens, something that most studies conclude is absolutely false.

The program was justly and accurately criticized by one immigration advocate as follows, according to the immigrant advocacy site: ThinkProgress.org:

"The establishment of this office sends a message that the Trump administration is fixated on continuing to stir fear of immigrants while spreading myths about undocumented immigrants and crime."

And another immigration advocate stated, according to the same site:

"It is blatantly racist and a dangerous new tool for extremists and white supremacists."

    https://thinkprogress.org/dhs-voice-...-4264019c2381/

Nothing in these comments is meant to suggest that Trump supports Nazis, antisemitism or mass extermination in any way, shape or form. Certainly he does not.

But his use of the Big Lie in attacking Latino, Muslim and other non-white immigrants as "criminals" and "terrorists", as part of his attempt to "reform" America's immigration system in order to exclude and expel immigrants from non-white parts of the world, has a very disturbing parallels with the past - parallels which Americans who care about our fundamental values of equal justice for all and about preserving our democracy can no longer ignore.

For a comprehensive, scholarly analysis by a respected academic authority on the origins of Donald Trump's Big Lie strategy in general, see the following September 3, 2016 Truthout.org article by Douglas Kellner, Chair in the Philosophy of Education at UCLA and author of many books on social theory and history:

"The Big Lie": How Trump Uses
    Classic Authoritarian Propaganda Techniques

(Available through Google - I do not have a direct link.) See also, Kellner:

Donald Trump, Media Spectacle, and Authoritarian Populism

    http://www.uta.edu/huma/agger/fastca...rump-Media.htm

where Kellner maintains that, in his words:

"Trump embodies Authoritarian Populism and has used racism, nationalism, xenophobia, and the disturbing underside of American politics to mobilize his supporters..."

Just as the German Fuehrer did with his country's public opinion.

  5. Purpose of Trump's Lies About MS-13 is Racial Attacks on Legal Immigration and Delegitimizing his Opponents, not Fighting Crime. Roger Algase

    Update, May 26, 4:11 pm:

    See also: ThinkProgress.org, May 25:

Trump's grotesque lie about Democrats and MS-13

    https://thinkprogress.org/trump-ms-1...-1a294da0a87d/

My (slightly revised) original comment follows:

Two recent analyses of Trump's attempts to exploit the MS-13 gang issue, one in the liberal site Salon.com and the other in the far right, pro-Trump Breitbart News, both show that the ultimate goal of attacking MS-13 is not to reduce crime, but to promote the Trump/Stephen Miller agenda of ending the legal immigration system as we know it in order to make vast reductions in immigration from outside Europe.

At the outset, whether building a wall and cutting off immigration from Central America is really an effective way to combat MS-13 is open to serious question. An article in Time Magazine by Sarah Garland, an independent researcher, states that most MS-13 gang members join only after arriving in the US, out of reaction against a feeling of isolation brought on, in large part, by poor school conditions, and that some gang members are not immigrants at all, but US citizens. She writes:

"What the police told me they needed most to help them fight the gangs was help for the schools. What they kept getting were immigration crackdowns."

    http://time.com/5127932/donald-trump...g-immigration/

Moreover, at Trump's May 24 Fox News interview, he quickly moved on from the subject of MS-13 to his real target - legal immigration. First he said:

"We have the worst immigration laws in the entire world by far."

Really? Worse than Myanmar, which is conducting genocide against its Rohingya population? Worse than North Korea? Worse than Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe, which has expelling its Asian and white citizens?

Then Trump continued with a call to eliminate two visa programs which have nothing whatsoever to do with MS-13 or with crime at all, but have been responsible for enabling tens of millions of legal, law-abiding, productive, tax-paying immigrants from all over the world, including Europe but in large part from Asia, Africa and Latin America, to come to the United States in the past several decades - extended family immigration - which he calls by the degrading and insulting term "chain migration, and the Diversity Visa lottery. Salon.com quotes Trump as follows:

"A lottery is ridiculous as you know...I mean, they take people from a lottery - where you can imagine these countries our putting their finest in the lottery - so I don't like the lottery. Chain migration is a disaster. You look at what;s going on where, somebody comes in whose bad, and yet they'll have 24 members of a family who - not one of them do you want in this country. So chain migration is terrible."

    See: Salon.com, May 24,

Stephen Miller is pushing Republicans to run against MS-13 in the midterms.

(Sorry - I do not have a direct link - please use Google.)

The only appropriate way to describe this comment, which Trump was not making for the first time, is that it is nothing but pure demagogic fiction. Foreign governments have nothing to do whatever with deciding who applies for a diversity lottery visa. Applicants selected in the diversity lottery are subject to the same criminal and security background checks as all other immigrants to the United States.

And Trump's fantasy that a radicalized Muslim immigrant who killed eight people on a New York City attack last October had sponsored 24 relatives for green cards was so absurd that even Mark Krikorian, head of the restrictionist Center for Immigration Studies, which has a long history of trying to reduce all forms of immigration and generally supports Trump on this issue, said that his claim was impossible.

    https://www.buzzfeed.com/adolfoflore...V8#.haYdb1jDV7

But this was not all. Trump then went on to blame the Democrats for immigration laws which, in Trump's view but without any foundation aided MS-13:

"We have the worst immigration laws in the world by far. Other countries laugh at us. And it's because of the Democrats. It's because of Chuck Shumer and Nancy Pelosi."

    And then, Trump's punch line:

"The Democrats are sticking up for MS-13. You heard Nancy Pelosi the other day, like, trying to find all sorts of reasons why they should be able to stay."

This last absolutely baseless accusation, as neither Pelosi nor any other Democrat has ever said that MS-13 immigrants should be allowed to stay in the US, or anything anywhere close to that, is the typical language of dictators the world over.

If the party that happens to be in opposition to the leader supports criminals and terrorists, as Trump has accused the Democrats of doing (or supports "communists and Jews", as in Adolf Hitler's accusations; or "capitalists and fascists", as in Josef Stalin's speeches), then it means that democracy itself is to blame and that we should do away with it and set up a dictatorship with the Strongman or Leader in charge of everything.

Certainly, in Trump's world, if the Democrats are in favor of violent crime, they do not deserve to govern; and maybe anyone, including a US citizen who supports them or protests against Trump in any way belongs in jail (such as the mayor of Oakland, California, for example), or should be deported, as in the case of NFL players who kneel during the national anthem to protest against Trump's racial attitudes and policies.

    https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018...ld-be-deported

But evidence that Trump is using MS-13 to promote an agenda against legal immigration and to discredit his opposition, rather than to fight crime, comes not only from his detractors, but also from some of his strongest supporters, including Breitbart News. See, May 24:

    http://www.breitbart.com/big-governm...-open-borders/

This article, after quoting an attack by Stephen Miller against Nancy Pelosi for allegedly defending MS-13, immediately switches to reporting on the Trump/Miller campaign against legal immigration, meaning both "chain migration" [including parents of US citizens -something that Trump didn't object to when his own wife's European parents recently arrived in the US with family-based visas, but seems to have a big problem with then when people from other parts of the world immigrate with the same kind of visa].

Breitbart also quotes Miller as saying that merely enforcing existing immigration laws is no longer enough - they need to be changed to eliminate "special interest loopholes" (such as those which allow millions of Africxan, Asian and Latin American relatives of US citizens to join their families here).

The Breitbart article then launches into an assault on the H-1B visa, which as everyone knows, has been especially popular with IT and other highly skilled professional immigrants from India, China and other Asian countries, claiming that it takes thousands of "coveted, high-paying, U.S. white-collar jobs every year away from US workers."

The Breitbart article doesn't explain how this fits in with Trump's claim that the reason that he wants to eliminate extended family immigration and the Diversity Visa lottery is to promote "merit-based immigration."

Keeping well-educated, highly skilled immigrants, such as H-1B specialty workers, out of the United States doesn't exactly sound like encouraging "merit-based" immigration. But it certainly would help to accomplish Trump's and Miller's goal of making America whiter.

The danger to the non-discriminatory, race and religion neutral, legal immigration immigration system that America has had for the past half century - one which, at least in principle, gives fair and equal opportunity to immigrants from every part of of the world to qualify, regardless of ancestry, creed or skin color, goes not end there. Breitbart News informs us:

"Miller tells Breitbart News that 'there is more to come' on the reform package currently being worked on by the Trump administration. The plan is being devised by Lee Francis Cissna, the director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Agency."

When Stephen Miller says that there is "more to come" in dismantling America's legal immigration system, it is quite appropriate to believe him. But it is not only the survival of this country's immigration system which severely threatened in Donald Trump's America - our democracy itself is at risk.

Here are some more nuggets of wisdom from Miller, Trump's top immigration Consigliere, as reported by Breitbart:

"It is impossible to overstate the extent to which the President of the United States is the leader that fate has correctly put at this moment in time to advocate for the American people and the American nation."

One cannot help being reminded of another Leader who began his road to power almost a century ago, and who was convinced that fate had chosen him to lead his nation and place it above all others in the world - Deutschland ueber alles. to use his own slogan - (while exterminating the Jews).

And as someone who, like Stephen Miller, is also descended from Jewish immigrants who, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. found a better life and refuge in America from intolerable persecution in Czarist Russia despite the fervent wish of the nativist immigrant-haters of that day to keep them out,

    http://jewishjournal.com/opinion/rob...t-grandfather/

I will refrain from describing my personal reaction to the dismal example of someone who shares my own immigrant background, and who is siding with those who want to slam America's doors against people who seek to come to America today for the same reasons, and with the same hopes and dreams, as my Jewish immigrant grandparents and Miller's Jewish immigrant great-grandfather did, merely because they may have different ancestry, religion or skin color from the majority of Americans today; just as Jewish immigrants were once considered to be different from the great American majority when Miller's great-grandfather arrived here.
