Matthew Kolken on Deportation And Removal

  1. Trump Admin Considering Separating Refugee Children from their Mothers at the Border

by , 03-07-2017 at 08:36 AM (Matthew Kolken on Deportation And Removal)

President Obama spent the last two years of his Presidency jailing refugee mothers and children in deportation internment camps. It appears President Trump is willing to go one step further by tearing refugee children from their mother's arms at the border. This is simply unconscionable.

Remember when Trump said that Christian refugees would be given special consideration and prioritized? Trump said "If you were a Muslim you could come in, but if you were a Christian, it was almost impossible and the reason that was so unfair -- everybody was persecuted, in all fairness -- but they were chopping off the heads of everybody but more so the Christians. And I thought it was very, very unfair. So we are going to help them."

Well, President Trump, these Central American refugees are Christian, and they need our help. And if you think this new policy will serve as a deterrent think again. These mothers are fleeing Central America to save the lives of their children, not for jobs, and if this new policy is enacted you are creating little more than a Sophie's choice.

    We must do better.

    From The Daily Beast:

Homeland Security Sec. John Kelly confirmed today that he is considering separating the children of undocumented immigrants from their parents if they are apprehended while illegally crossing the border.

“Yes, I am considering, in order to deter more movement along this terribly dangerous network, I am considering exactly that,” Kelly told CNN host Wolf Blitzer.
“They will be well cared for as we deal with their parents.”

Kelly said he thought the change might deter mothers and children from making the dangerous journey from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador to the United States.
