The Supreme Court heard oral arguments yesterday about the constitutionality of Arizona's immigration law (SB 1070). Justice Reports indicated that the Court will limit its review to issues relating to state-versus-federal power, not questions about potential civil rights violations.
Justice Kagan reused herself, which could potentially result in a deadlocked 4-4 decision. With that in mind, the typically liberal Justices voiced significant concerns with the Government's arguments.
Justice Sotomayor: "I'm sorry.… I'm terribly confused by your answer," "Your argument — that this systematic cooperation is wrong — is not selling very well. Why don't you try to come up with something else?"
Justice Stephen G. Breyer remarked that he did not see a problem if "all that happens is a policeman makes a phone call.… I'm not clear what your answer is to that."
Swing voter Justice Anthony M. Kennedy: "So you're saying the government has a legitimate interest in not enforcing its laws?"
If just one of the three above Justices sides with the conservative bloc of the Court all or part of the law may stand.
We shall see.

That isn t right, but it s frustrating. At my moms work, the owenrs are Egyptian; they walk around all day talking in Egyptian. It is funny; you know when they are talking about you because the only thing in the conversation you understand is your name. They can t change that! My mom will tell them to speak English, they just laugh. Growing up my best friend was Spanish; when I would go to her house it was awful. Her family only spoke Spanish and refused to speak English. I would be sitting on the couch, what did they say, what is she saying, because I didn t have any clue. It was amusing but yet it was also uncomfortable. It was uncomfortable to be around people and not know what anyone is saying. On the other hand, my mom and dad travel a lot to other countries, and they have no clue what the other languages are and they walk around talking English. I am sure people think the same thing about my parents when they hear them talking in English.

Two things; One, if the feds won't do their job, what makes them think Arizona can't step in and enforce federal law? Second, the employer provision is a 25 year old battle. Neo-illegals don't work, they are on the public dole and it is strangling these border states.
