Trey Gowdy Named House Immigration Subcommitee Chair

Rate this Entry
Not a good sign. Gowdy has an A- rating from the anti-immigrant organization NumbersUSA. He doesn't have a long history on the issue since he's only finishing up his first term in Congress. But given some of the more reasonable people that could have been chosen and given the selection of Bob Goodlatte to chair the parent committee (Goodlatte has the highest anti-immigration rating in all of Congress), it certainly sends the signal that the GOP is not serious about immigration reform.

Anyhow Democrats also not serious as President Obama just talks. If he takes initiative like Fiscal cliff and then also fails then we can put blame on republicans. Democrats are more interested in getting election gains using immigration than trying for immigration reform

I agree with Sam. The Democrats just want to beat up the GOP on immigration and the GOP continues to play into their hands. The Dems also know that after the reform, the Hispanics will end up in the GOP camp contrary to what the racists and rednecks say.

That would be true if more than 74% hispanics had not voted for Obama. They mostly vote democrats.

I think repubs are trying new approach. Both these appointees are not known for their harsh words but still anti immigration. Maybe Boehner is trying to keep right wing happy with his selection and hopes to fool latinos with lip singing.

They will continue to play a losing game

I think the present stalemate works in Democrats favor as does the present stalemate on the fiscal cliff. The voters are extremely fickle. Once they get what they want they generally move on and the politicians know this. I will also bet that even the parents of the Newtown victims are very fickle. They will scream for gun control and more security, but if some Grover Norquist like clown shows up and proposes a tax cut referendum without telling what spending cuts they need to make, the same folks wont think twice, they will vote for the tax cut and compromise the security of their children. The average American does not think through things and this runs across all groups in the country.
