How Republicans Could Screw Up Immigration Reform

Rate this Entry
Walter Shapiro outlines how Republicans may avoid doing what is in the party's aggregate best interest and pass on comprehensive immigration reform. Among other things, he points to worries about being primaried by right wingers in 2014, some trying to delude themselves in to believing the Latino problem was Mitt Romney's and not the party's, and others trying to cherry pick some smaller easier proposals (like STEM) and avoiding the more difficult ones. I'm actually more optimistic because I believe there are now enough significant power players in the party behind reform to pressure a minimum number of moderates to go along. For example, 2016 presidential frontrunners Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Speaker John Boehner, Karl Rove, several commentators at Fox News and various other big name Republicans will all push on this issue knowing that the chance for winning the White House in 2016 will be even less than 2012 if immigration reform fails to move. That will especially be true if the economy is in better shape. But his point is a good one - do NOT take it for granted that the GOP will roll over on immigration reform. The battle will be a tough one.

All they have to do is drop the self-deportation agenda and support extending the validity of the DACA card. If a 2 year DACA can deliver votes one way, a 5 year card can move them the other way.

I think they will be tempted to stay in their comfort zone of being anti-immigrant which is what they are.....specially as then 2014 election gets closer. But it will be a battle determined by those who did learn the lesson of being anti-immigrant and those who just want to stick their head in the sand. The Latino vote will not just forget them by passing CIR is merely a down payment on the healing process the GOP will have to do with Latinos so the sooner they start the healing process the better they may start doing with that voting block.

It is not about sticking head in sand. Most resdricting have assured that house republicans will not lost in main election. Their competition is in primaries. Hence house republicans have not choice but to pander to crowd in primaries. Primaries are usually low turnout events. In those elections pandering to extremists becomes very important. All in all they do not have enough incentives to move to center on any issue. Just look at fiscal cliff issues. Even after clear mandate from public they are so against taxing the rich, to pander to their crowd of primaries.

I hope they prove me wrong.
