Democrats Embrace Pro-Immigration Message at Party Convention

Rate this Entry

While the Republicans liked to trot out speakers with accents (as well as instructing every speaker to point out their immigrant heritage - like most Americans have) very little was said about immigration policy. Though when the subject came up, it was usually to bash immigrants - Rick Santorum I'm talking to you.

The Democrats, on the other hand, have no qualms getting specific in promoting immigration reform, touting the DREAM Act and DACA and reminding voters that there is only one pro-immigration party. And before readers chime in with "Romney likes legal immigrants" I am talking about the fact that nearly all of the anti-immigrant loudmouths in Congress are Republican (including almost all members of the anti-immigrant Immigration Reform Caucus), the RNC platform was basically written by Kris K(?) Kobach and Mitt Romney himself is the father of the concept of self-deportation. And Republicans like Charles Grassley are always there blocking legal immigration reform measures.

The Dems, on the other hand, gave the choice keynote speaker spot to up and comer Julian Castro, the young Latino mayor of San Antonio. It's party platform embraces broad immigration reforms along the lines of the Bush/Kennedy proposals from the last decade and opposition to draconian state laws like Arizona's SB1070. Michelle Obama visited the Hispanic Caucus today in Charlotte and reminded delegates of her husband's strong support for the DREAM Act. Tonight DREAMer Benita Veliz will address the DNC during prime time shortly before President Clinton takes the stage. And speaker after speaker has praised the President's deferred action policy as proof of the party's commitment to being pro-immigration.

Romney likely got a small bounce with Hispanic voters last week just based on the fact that they kept immigration out of the spotlight (except to say they like Latinos). But I'm guessing he's even further behind by the end of this week.

The GOP did not even talk about legal immigration despite Romney claiming to want to give green cards to all foreign STEM graduates of US universities

FLAUNTING the unlawfully present at their national convention? Have the Democrats no shame? That question is answered by who speaks last before Clinton--the corrupt on a multitude of levels Antonio Villar(aigosa). You might have heard about his many controversies but did you know where his power comes from?

    From L.A. Weekly:

In Los Angeles, however, the death of the old party machines merely opened the door for a new one -- an alliance of the L.A. County Federation of Labor and the city's Latino leaders that now routinely decides who will represent voters in elective offices across the region. The federation's get-out-the-vote machine is almost unbeatable in low-turnout primaries, which is where most competitive races are now decided.

"It's the closest thing you have to an omnipotent political machine anywhere in the state," says Dan Walters, a Sacramento Bee columnist and a longtime expert on California politics.

At the controls are Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and labor-federation leader Maria Elena Durazo.

"She has the big finger," Walters says. "She points, you win."

Was she even on stage a minute?

"But I've had to live almost my entire life knowing I could be deported just because of the way I came here."

After all, the way people come here means nothing, right? She didn't even call her parents heroes for violating immigration law like most editorials by "Dreamers". Maybe even the Democrats are not THAT tone deaf and know not to mention the parents when demagoguing with the Dream Act poster children.

I really dont give a damn about the law. Americans keep violating all kinds of laws all the time...particularly traffic laws here in VA. They say a fine of $100, but nobody implements the rules. As I have said when it comes down between the law and economics to hell with the law. She finished college at age 20. The question is not one of humanity here as far as I am concerned. The question is whether her quality is bettter than that of an American. If it is, give here a job and keep her here irrespective of whether her parents broke the law or not!

No one enforces the law when it is convenient for them, and this includes the Secretary of State for the State of Ohio who has openly defied the judge's ruling....
