Alabama Primary: Will Romney Try To Tone Down Immigration Positions or Double Down

Rate this Entry

Poor Mitt. He's boxed himself into a corner on immigration. He's tried to prove his conservative bona fides by being the most extreme on immigration. But in the wake of the Fox News poll showing Obama crushing all of the GOP contenders with Hispanic voters, Romney may be thinking it's time to flip flop back to being a moderate on immigration. Unfortunately for Romney, Alabamans love their crazy immigration law and Romney hasn't exactly been good at telling his audiences anything less than exactly what they want to hear. Talking Points Memo has more on this.

    Greg,

    A procedure question.

I have EB based AOS pending since 2007, and recently I won DV Lottery. In my EB application last I heard on is that my I-485 is pre-adjudicated (dont know if anything of this exists), but I will not be current anytime soon. I am going for AOS with DV as well, my question is do I have to start from scratch for DV bases AOS? medicals.. etc.?

    Thanks.

Romney is making a mistake by continuing to pander to the hater on the republican base. When he locks down the nomination ALL the republicans will vote for him as opposed to Obama thus why waste your time locking yourself with the extremes which will only make it harder to try to come back to the middle, he already has issues with him not being genuine/empty suit so people will not believe any general election flip flops...

That's the same mistake Meg Whitman did in her run for CA Governor. She selected infamous former governor and immigrant-hater Pete Wilson as campaign manager.
It basically cost her the election.

Jobs, jobs and jobs. Candidate pursuing anything else will be vanished. Obama, pro dream, got shellacking in 2010 because he pursued ideologies rather than jobs. Reagan democrats decide elections and they could care less about immigration when their future is in jeopardy. Romney (and Obama) understand this very well. Hence both of them are doing nothing to appease Mexicans.

You are ignoring the fact that the Latino vote is a growing voting block that will swing many states, I will concede that vote parties do not care about immigration, but in order to do jobs and get the votes you have to get the "mexicans"(your term) to vote for you....you they tend to influence the vote out west!!

Obviously not as much or else politicians would be courting them with head over heels. Moreover when Super PACs start spending money for Romney, it will make voters dance to their tune.

    How Mitt Romney lost Latinos

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0312/74036.html

Instead, with eight months to go before Election Day, Obama is on pace to match the 76 percent support he got from Latino voters in 2008 -- and the GOP may be undoing a decade of work to attract Hispanics, thanks to its election-year rhetorical sprint to the right on immigration, a charge led by front-runner Mitt Romney.

Romney should be more worried about losing his base rather than latinos. If they are not excited, he is toast. Moreover he has same problem as Whitman, unable to connect with people. He boasts about his association with NFL team owners rather than connecting with people who watch NFL. Rather than focusing on problems of people his focus is on explaining his wealth.

As for Obama, if he thinks distracting people with contraceptive care will work for him, he is in denial about results of 2010 elections. People are worried about their future and jobs. Rest is all BS. When economy is in toilet rest is all out of the window. Nothing works like war for and bad against ruling party.

"Romney should be more worried about losing his base rather than latinos. If they are not excited, he is toast." The problem with that strategy is that you only attract potentially 45% of the electorate, you still need to attract some of the independent vote and some democrats to win. The base will be there just because the want to beat Obama playing to them is like beating a dead horse....This guy is much like McCain he was not popular with the base but in the end they turned out to vote for him...

"if he thinks distracting people with contraceptive care will work for him, he is in denial about results of 2010 elections." Is not about that is about the women vote, they tend to vote more than man. Women care more about jobs that Healthcare but somehow going back in time on these issue is not going to motivate women to vote for the Cans. "When economy is in toilet rest is all out of the window. Nothing works like war for and bad against ruling party." Recovery is timid but on the way and then you always have the Iranian option....I do not think the country has appetite for that at all.

Every state should have a right to have its own immigration laws. Federal government should not interfere with needs (or in this case non needs) of states. Federal government should just provide background checks on individuals. Rest of the needs of its businesses should be left to states. If states do not need illegal/legal immigrants then they should be able to enforce the law. Nothing wrong with it, except ofcourse no racial profiling.
