Obama: I've Got Five Years to Fix Immigration

Rate this Entry

President Obama gave an interview this week to Univision and told Hispanic voters that he intends to push for an overhaul of the US immigration system before he leaves office. He also reminded voters that the GOP candidates not only don't support comprehensive immigration reform, but not even more modest measures like the DREAM Act.

India Inc insources jobs to America

The powerful narrative in American minds about Indian companies, a result of years of campaigning against outsourcing, is that they operate in the United States mainly to send jobs back home, or wrench it by hiring cheap labour from India.

The meme is just as strong as the one that exists about the Chinese: Indians are responsible for the decline in service sector jobs, just as the Chinese are behind the job losses in the manufacturing sector.

But, unbeknownst to much of America, a new trend has emerged: insourcing by the Indian industry. Investments by Indian companies in the US have led to the creation of more than 100,000 jobs and saved thousands of jobs from being eliminated.

Data compiled by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) reveals that just seven Indian companies alone currently have 65,000 employees in the US, with the Tata Group alone employing 24,000 (see graphic The Biggest India Inc Job-Creators in the US)

Even in the most optimistic scenario, he'll only get 2 years maybe. It's not like the Democrats will have filibuster proof majorities in the next 3 years. Even less likely is Republicans voting in favor of legalization.

This decision "should send a shock wave through the resident alien community," said Sanford Millar, a tax lawyer in Los Angeles.

"tax experts note that the ruling applies only to criminal tax violations, not civil claims that result in repayments."

The lesson: Don't defraud the the country that let you in--especially for close to a quarter million dollars. Legally, all that matters is the amount in the statute, but the huge $245,000 figure isn't going to gain you sympathy points.

If by 5 he means 4 for the first term and he would have to do it in the first year of the second term given that he wins and gets favorable numbers in congress he would be correct. Too many BIG If's with such statements. It just makes him sound like the same guy that has been playing politics with the Issue since he started running for president. Perhaps this is the line that will replace the " I will do Immigration in the first 100 days of my term".

Jack, this person paid the IRS back and served his sentence. Treating it like it's a crime of moral turpitude is stupid. However, what you probably don't understand is that even if someone made a $1,000 mistake by accidentally throwing some papers away (of course, no American ever owed anything on their taxes, or had their records not in perfect order, or threw something away accidentally when moving), they can be punished by deportation. I take it, it will be fine with you, since your only goal is to get rid of as many of'em dirty foreigners, anyway.

Whether he has got five years or not will depend on the economy. If it grows at 2.4% this year as claimed by NABE he will have five years. If it goes into a recession as ECRI claims (and they have been claiming this since fall), then he does not even have a year.

"But last year the State Department told Hizam that he had received his citizenship in 1990 "due to department error.""

Incompetent people work for the US State Department. Half of them cant think for themselves...that is why they are employed there.

Talk is cheap. He's done nothing in more than three years but talk. When he had control of congress he did NOTHING to push anything through. Now with the election coming he's doing just enough to say that he's doing something. Certain waivers for a very small number of already approved cases will come out just before the election. Prosecutorial discretion seems to be exercised mostly in favor of those cases that would get relief anyway.

Please tell me where I am wrong.

    Simple equation:
If Dems Win 2012: No immigration reform what so ever..legal or illegal doesn't matter..all lip service..i can bet my money on this. 5 yrs or 4 yrs doesn't matter. Even a 5th grader knows that.
If Repubs win: No illegal what so ever..may be some on the legal front but not much..
So...american economy may stabilaize but will loose the edge or advantage..and soon other progressive countries will go ahead in the next 15 yrs..sad but true!!!

What, if anything, has Romney said about H1-Bs and entrepreneur visas? He's certainly hired a lot of people here under each category in the past, and Mormons are the most polyglot people on the continent.
I know Santorum wants to treat Middle Eastern and communist nation Christians like we used to treat East European Jews.
Republican rhetoric may be bleaker than the reality if they come in.

Where are you getting that? From everything I've read, mistakes would not be enough and the threshold is $10,000. Even before your post, I wondered if anti-enforcement advocates will say that one little mistake or miscalculation on your tax return will get you deported.

The only problem is with advisors such as Kobach in his line up, I simply dont believe him. And the Academy Awards was flooded with foreigners, but did the CIS, FAIR or Heather McDonald have any problem with Americans being displaced. The answer is if you are white, you are not considered a foreigner by bigots like Stein, Camarotta, Kirkorian and McDonald. They get offended that I call them bigots and racists. I told them that once they start condenming infiltration of American culture personified by Hollywood, by foreign whites, I will continue to call them racists...if they keep complaining about 35,000 or so visas given to Indian and Chinese programmers!
