Wadhwa: Skilled Worker Visa Reform Could Boost Housing Market

Rate this Entry

Here's the gist of his plan:

Our country needs to expand the numbers of EB-1, EB-2, and EB-3 visas available, remove the per-country limits, and tie the immediate issuance of these visas to the purchase of a home. I estimate that at the least 20% of qualified immigrants will take the government up on this offer. That amounts to more than 100,000 houses being sold within a short period of time--a roughly $25 billion potential boost to the anemic housing market. Plus these workers will furnish their new houses, buy new appliances, and buy new cars. That amounts to billions more in economic stimulus.

Unlike the bailouts and subsidies that our leaders have been debating, this will cost taxpayers practically nothing. It will also reduce the outflow of talent and allow these ambitious immigrants to start new businesses that create jobs. With the economy in the doldrums, lingering unemployment, and a political stalemate on how to deal with the nation's problems, we need some fresh, out-of-the-box thinking. A program like what I am proposing will appeal to both sides of the political spectrum and give our economy a badly needed boost.

One-shot gimmicks like the first time buyer credit just try to reinflate the bubble, are not sustainable, and do nothing about the real problem--housing prices simply shot way past historic levels. If you are a free marketer, you should oppose market interventions like this and let the prices fall to where they should be.

Jack, dont insult our intelligence. If you are a free marketer there should be no quotas on migration and no intervention in housing market. I think they should let all migrants come in and let the wages fall where they may and they should let people construct as much houses as they need and let the prices fall where they may!

Jack, saying you are for free markets except you want more protectionist regulation so you don't have to compete with other workers is like asking to keep the big government out of your Medicare. By the way, was that you with this sign at the tea party rally? I would not be surprised.

I just bought a house, can I get a GC? You don't need a Wadhwa to come up with plans like these. I have been about a similar plan where a GC can be issued to any legal immigrant who is here in the US for at least 3 yrs & make mortgage payments for 5 years for a house purchased.

Many workers, from engineers with bachelor's degrees to unskilled laborers, may be admitted to the United States under the EB-3 visa classification. This category is devoted to skilled workers, professionals and unskilled laborers. Immaterial of education and experience, anyone applying for this visa must have a job offer in the US.
The EB-3 belongs to a large category of employment-based immigrant visas. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) grants 140,000 EB visas each year, including one for immigrant investors (the EB-5) and one for individuals of exceptional ability (the EB-2).
Like the EB-1 and EB-2 , the EB-3 visa requires that the individual be offered a full-time, permanent position in the US. The number of EB-3 visas available depends, in part, on the number of EB-1 and EB-2 visas granted.

Have you ever noticed how self-righteous bleeding hearts with a lot to say about how illegally present aliens should not be accountable to immigration law turn silent and stone cold when their anti-enforcement extremism results in homicide?

Have you ever noticed how self-righteous antis and racist people can be when they try to stereotype all people because of the wrong act of one!!! Remember in the segregation days when a black person committed a crime they try to say that segregation should no be abolished because of that....yeah is sort of like that for undocumented workers as soon as a bad apple goes and does something stupid is never a missed opportunity to pain everyone with the brush of criminal!!! The antis....soooo text book racism get anew book Jack we have heard these claims before.

Jack, have you every noticed that Americans have five times the incarceration rate of immigrants? You are much safe in an immgrant community than in among naitve born of similar education/income, and it is particularly true of Hispanic males 18 to 35.

"pain [sic] everyone with the brush of criminal"

I missed the part where I said that. Your counterargument is often against something I didn't even argue rather than what I say. E.g., I pointed out a falsehood someone said on Fox News and you accuse me of defending Fox News (which I did not).

Greg, you seem to be having software issues with your blog. This posting is dated August 20 and appears above later posts, ie September 6.
