Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

Greenspan: We Need Immigrants to Make Up for Problems with US Workforce

Rating: 13 votes, 4.69 average.

Some tough words, but a reality check is a good thing.

Former Federal Reserve chairman, Alan Greenspan, has lashed out at America's younger workforce, saying they don't match up to the 'baby boom' generation.

Mr Greenspan said the U.S. is in the process of seeing the baby boomers, which he called 'the most productive, highly skilled, educated part of our labour force' retire.

'They are being replaced by groups of young workers who have regrettably scored rather poorly in international educational match-ups over the last two decades,' he added in the interview with Globalist.

Mr Greenspan then suggested it would be better for America to hire skilled immigrants to counter the worrying trend.

'Most high-income people in our country do not realise that their incomes are being subsidised by their protection from competition from highly skilled people who are prevented from immigrating to the United States,' he said.

American IQ is held up by Asians and Asian Americans. Without Asians and Asian Americans this country will fall apart....

"Nationwide, the percentage of Asian American students scoring in the upper echelons on math exams was 17 points higher than the percentage of white students. Notably, that gap has continued to widen in more recent years. In Virginia, for example, Asian American students' advanced-level math performance leapt from 59 percent to 76 percent between 2006 and 2009, compared with an increase from 43 percent to 58 percent for white students.

In Maryland, that same pattern was apparent on reading tests. The percentage of Asian American students who tested in advanced levels grew from 40 percent to 58 percent between 2006 and 2009. The percentage of white students in that category grew from 35 percent to 48 percent."

And one of the top schools in the country and perhaps the world is about 85% Asian and Asian American...Gretchen Whitney High School in Cerritos, CA. although there is a sizeable mixed race Asian-white population among the high achieving Asian population with one parent an usually immigrant from Asia...

Tired of words and inaction. It is getting pretty old. Infact action by this administration is to make life hell for immigrants both at USCIS and consulates/embassies.

I echo the same sentiment from Nurse Waiting.I feel the lack of immigration reform and blind enforcement in the name of stopping illegal immigration has made legal immigration a bane.Had I known I would waste 7 years of my life standing in the line for LPR status and another unknown years to apply for my spouse, my decisions would have been different as well. I hope there are still leaders in the US who actually are willing to act in the right direction.

Fear and anger shot through the media about immigrants prevents America from seen the benefits of immigration this time.... Benefits that America has ripped from Immigration since the foundation of this country. Let's face it they are afraid of not being in the majority....

After October, when large budget cuts will commence, particularly in education, the US will have no choice but to raise the levels of skilled immigration if it does not want jobs to move abroad, leading to further decreases in tax revenue, followed by even further cuts in spending...they will be confronted with this choice. US will either respond positively or go down like many other great countries of the past did.

Greenspan's assessment is a bit harsh. The issue is not that the current generation does not match up to the boomers but that other countries have become more competitive compared to the US. The boomers did not have much competition from the rest of the world.

However, in the 1960s, boomer students did perform better in math and science than the students of today!

The worst part is that a lot of the competition is american educated yet not allowed to benefit America due to our Immigration policies.

Gosh, I'm surprised Mr. Siskind doesn't recognize Mr. Greenspan's diatribe as the defamation per se against American students and workers that it is. Of course, seeing that the campaign of slander and libel against American brainpower, American work ethic, American competence, and American employability has been going on for a long time, I guess we are supposed to have become used to it. I see the foreign footsoldiers in the smacktalk campaign are showing up too. Yes, we know you really, really, really want American jobs.

Bart, there is no such thing as "American job". The job belongs to the person most qualified to do it. If you want to make it yours, all you need to do is to win it back.

If there is no such thing as an "American" job, then there must be no such thing as a "Russian" job or and "Indian" job or a "French" job and so on. But that will come as a big surprise to every other nation on the earth that still has enough common sense to protect their society and their workers from being overrun.

Show me evidence that Americans are performing better than foreign students at US or any other global universities and I will take your side. Evidence such as GPA...dont give me the bull that GPA should not be the only thing to carry weight...then you are no different than minorities asking for affirmative action!

"Of course, seeing that the campaign of slander and libel against American brainpower, American work ethic, American competence, and American employability has been going on for a long time, I guess we are supposed to have become used to it."

Based on evidence. Most American students cannot even multiply 15 times and 15 without a calculator...and are pretty poor in math and science based on international tests and performance at universities. True, budget cuts do impact but then you need to fight against the coming budget cuts instead of living in a makebelieve world!

"I see the foreign footsoldiers in the smacktalk campaign are showing up too. Yes, we know you really, really, really want American jobs."

See below..pretty dumb and moronic statement!

"If there is no such thing as an "American" job, then there must be no such thing as a "Russian" job or and "Indian" job or a "French" job and so on....."

Absolutely right! There is no thing as a Russian, Indian or French job. You happen to be living in a cave all these years?

Greenspan is right on target. Though a minority of Americans who are talented and intelligent may take offence , his comments provides a reality check. For too long Americans have been conditioned to believe that they are leaders of the world in every field and American "exceptional ism" is an inherent quality.

Although white and black Americans may take offense, black Americans have a culture of victimhood, although racism is a real problem (Michele Bachmann is a racist, and keeps poking Africans Americans in the eye...and she will soon come after Asians and Asian Americans). Meanwhile, white Americans have a culture of privilege and entitlement...they are superior, others are inferior and are employed due to low wages..and that you have to be blonde and blue eyed to be a real American. The fact is these white Americans cannot even win a spelling competition in their own language...the mother tongues of the past four spelling bee winners are definitely not English....the fact there is a part of this country where whites really dont speak English as the world knows it (a clue here: with all due respect to Greg!)
