Republicans - Channel Your Inner Libertarian to Support Immigration Reform

Rate this Entry

My friend Stuart Anderson makes that case in his latest blog for Forbes. He notes that those calling most loudly for E-Verify to become required of employers don't seem to appreciate that the system really means that all Americans and their employers will have to basically ask permission from the federal government before hiring someone - whether the worker is a citizen or not. And by not supporting the establishment of  workable guest worker programs with rules that can be reasonably met and with a visa supply that is set by the market, those in Congress claiming to believe in the free enterprise system are being hypocritical. Of course, for many in the GOP, this is not about law and order and ignoring their free market leanings is quite deliberate. This is about promoting a xenophobia that is also, unfortunately, a driving force in some circles in both the far right (and some segments of the left, though those voices are not nearly as dominant).

Update: Here's Stuart's video interview with the Wall Street Journal.
