Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

GINGRICH ENDORSES LEGALIZATION OF THE UNDOCUMENTED

Rate this Entry

Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich continues to stake out his claim as the sole moderate on immigration in the GOP campaign. Politico reports that he is in favor of a legalization program that will allow "citizen boards" (similar to the draft boards of an earlier era) to determine whether undocumented immigrants deserve to stay in the US. He explicitly rejected a path to legalization. Gingrich is considered a favorite of those in the Tea Party and the candidate's more enlightened positions on immigration support the argument that not all those in the Tea Party are hardliners on immigration.

The question is if you are going to believe in a politician again as a voter(say Latinos, why would you support this position over Obama's. Is still a shot in the dark because as we can see Immigration reform takes more than a president willingness to do it.... Not sure that any republican can be sold into CIR. Not as long as the radicals continue to dominate their agenda.

the words "Citizens boards" from a white guy sound alarmingly kind. Baby steps? into an elitist trap? I guess it's hard to admit mistakes in washington so back to shifting the blame of the issue to those who were and are given a set of rules for a system that is inherently broken.
fixing and requiring compliance to a modern immigration system altogether is the only way to appease everybody, at least those willing to come to the table with contemporary concepts of global family and workforce as key to social and economical survival and success.
and also will the "Boards" then screen citizens in general and will the citizenship have grades?

Gingrich just handed the nomination to Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachmann and may be Mitt Romney...however, Romney is too moderate on other issues.
