Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

I CAN KILL BIN LADIN, BUT I'M HELPLESS ON IMMIGRATION

Rate this Entry

Perry Bacon, Jr. writes in today's Washington Post that the President seems to be more interested in blaming the Republicans for his inability to deliver on immigration rather than actually making a serious effort to fix the problems.

To President Obama - you've shown you're a serious bad @$S with your historic capture of the world's most wanted man. No one seriously believes you're helpless if you really consider something a priority.

Perry Bacon, Jr. states the following while quoting some sentences extracted from President Obama's speech as well:
"I know some here wish that I could just bypass Congress and change the law myself," he said at Miami Dade, making reference to calls by some Latino activists to use some of his powers as an executive to limit deportations. 'But that's not how democracy works.'"

As always, mainstream media (in this case the Washington Post) seem not to make a conscious effort of analyzing the extraordinary powers that the Executive Branch possesses during war times. Mr. Bacon should ask why Congress has not impeached Obama for launching a military campaign against the Gaddafi regime without the approval of the Legislative Branch...maybe he should bother to read the most concurrent version of the War Powers Act (1973) in order to comprehend how governmental decisions are carried out - not surprising that mass-media communicators do not want to educate readers.

The President spoke to an ignorant audience that doesn't have a single clue about the real extents of these extraordinary powers. No wonder why any student during (or after) the commencement ceremony clarified him that the United States of America is a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC, NOT A DEMOCRACY.

DUE TO NATIONAL SECURITY CONCERNS, THE ONGOING ECONOMIC UPHEAVAL AND CONGRESS' INABILITY TO PASS AN IMMIGRATION REFORM, President Obama will issue pretty soon an Executive Order granting some sort of legal protection to millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United States based on certain prerequisites and requirements: most likely a renewable work permit while mandating these individuals to register in DHS database and the Selective Service System as well.

For those who may wonder why this participant places such "annoying" statement on every new topic, here is another clue: National Security Presidential Directive NSPD 51/Homeland Security Presidential Directive HSPD-20...time to do your homework.

There is no correct spelling. It's a transliteration of Arabic. How many ways can you spell Kaddafi?

Think he believes that he got burnt by health care reform and should have focused on the economy. His advisors are telling him that all he has to do is sit on it and let the GOP hang itself with its fourteenth amendment and other crap and if the economy improves he wins...no matter what! And as long as Brits and Europeans shoot themselves on the foot regarding immigration, some jobs will move here.

Bin Laden killed the original CIR back in 2001 when Bush and Fox were talking about the whole enchilada.... But I still think that no drama Obama will not act on his own to solve immigration his campaign already made the political calculation to risk the Latino vote stay home due to the weakness in the republican side. The economy, gas prices and jobs would be the only thing that can make it a close election and that would be the only thing that would force his hand after all he will need to give the Latino vote a reason to get out specially if they ask themselves " are you better off than you were 4 years ago?".

Navy SEALs Squadron That Killed Bin Laden Included Rub?n Mej?a, The Son Of Mexican Immigrants

Last night, President Obama announced that the world's most wanted terrorist had been captured and killed by U.S. special forces. A CIA-led Navy SEALs squadron of just a few dozen men were tapped to perform the mission. One of the soldiers selected to participate in the "counterterrorism group [that is] so specialized that no one can apply to join it" is Rub?n Mej?a, the son of Mexican immigrants.

Mexico's El Universal newspaper reports that Mej?a's parents came to the U.S. from Guanajuato, a city in central Mexico. Rub?n Mej?a was born in the U.S. and enlisted at the Moreno Valley, California military base six years ago. After spending 7 months in Afghanistan, Mej?a joined the SEALs and was able to see Osama Bin Laden's corpse as it was carried out of the building where he was killed yesterday.

Mej?a's father, a machine operator, recalled the moment that soldiers in uniform came to his home in Los Angeles holding a folded flag. "It was one of the biggest scares," explained Mart?n Mej?a. "When they [the soldiers] saw us [the family] begin to cry they clarified that bringing the flag was an expression of recognition and honor because our son had carried out a great mission for our nation," stated the SEAL's father.

For a long time, Latinos were underrepresented in the armed forces. Yet, this started to change dramatically as the Army launched "a vast recruiting campaign targeting Latino youth, placing ads in Spanish-language media, including magazines, radio, and television." In fact, several military experts have come out in support of the DREAM Act which would legalize undocumented youth who go to college or serve in the military precisely because it would significantly increase the pool of qualified recruits in the Latino population -- which comprises the majority of undocumented immigrants and is more likely to enlist and serve in the military than any other group.

There is a flip side to this as well. Casualties among Latino soldiers in Iraq ranked the highest compared to other minority groups in 2007. In fact, Marine Lance Cpl. Jose Gutierrez -- an orphan who made the 2,000-mile journey from Guatemala City to the U.S. at age 14 -- was one of the first U.S. servicemen killed in combat in Iraq.

Meanwhile, many also claim that Latinos are being left out of the military's highest ranks. "In the last 75 years, there have been only three (Latino) officers on active duty with three stars and just one with four. What's the problem? We're as capable, competent and educated as any other segment of society," retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez stated last year. If the hundreds of Latinos who have died serving our country abroad aren't enough to change that, hopefully Rub?n Mej?a's brave and historic actions are.

    AV:

This story is false. Here is the giveaway:

"Mej?a's father, a machine operator, recalled the moment that soldiers in uniform came to his home"

Under protocol that is customary for these type of situations ordinary soldiers would not learn the names of the participants. Thus, there is no question of soldiers visiting the family of the SEAL. See below:

I might add that the father claiming credit for something that he knows is not verifiable is extremely dispicable. This is the type of conduct that gives fodder to the antis.

There is actually a Special Operations forum that you can visit to verify claims (false claims are frequent) of being a SEAL. The Administrator (see post 8) confirms that Meija was never a SEAL:

Greg, if an immigration bill passes the Congress between now and 2012, I can guarantee that you will not like it. Be careful what you wish for. Obama depended on the Seals to carry out the mission and he depends on the Congress to pass a bill.

The president seems to be trying to use this as a carrot/stick strategy with Latinos. If you vote for democratic majorities again then we can have CIR. The problem is that he has a credibility gap in the matter given his broken promises....I honestly think that given these statements Latinos will haver no incentive to come out to vote on 2012 even to their own further damage, they can not believe Obama that another vote for him will give them CIR or something CIR like....not sure this is a smart strategy for Obama either he is marginalizing an important voting block. They only winners here are the repuks!!

"We're here because Obama is a liar," said Carlos Escorcia, a member of the Nicaraguan socialist Sandinista National Liberation Front. "He promised legalization. When he could have done it, he didn't. This government's worse than Bush's."

This s**thead wants to pretend that the great recession didn't happen. I think Hispanics should vote for Romney and see what happens with Republicans controlling all three. I'm going to sit back and enjoy the fun.
