Readout of the President's Meeting with Influential Hispanics on Fixing the Broken Immigration System

In a meeting in the Roosevelt Room today, the President and Senior Administration officials met with influential Hispanics from across the country to discuss the importance of fixing the broken immigration system for our nation's 21st century economic and security needs so that America can win the future. The President reiterated his deep disappointment that Congressional action on immigration reform has stalled and that the DREAM Act failed to pass in the U.S. Senate after passing the U.S. House with a bipartisan majority in December.

The President talked about the broken immigration system, including concerns he heard about when he met with leaders from the law enforcement, faith and business sectors last week. The President reiterated his concern that we educate the best and brightest but then ship that talent overseas or expel talented young people who have grown up as Americans and want to further their education or serve in our military. The President reiterated his commitment to comprehensive immigration reform that both strengthens security at our borders while restoring accountability to the broken immigration system, and pointed out that perpetuating a broken immigration system is not an option if America is to win the future.

The President also noted that the only way to fix what's broken about our immigration system is through legislative action in Congress, and that he cannot unilaterally change the law. He made it clear that while his Administration continues to improve our legal immigration system, secure our borders, and enhance our immigration enforcement so that it is more effectively and sensibly focused on criminals, more voices are needed to elevate the immigration debate beyond the politics, false debates, and rhetoric that have dominated the issue.

The President urged meeting participants to help elevate the debate, and to reach out in their unique capacities and in a public way to forge partnerships across sectors and across demographics. There was broad agreement that more voices are needed to change the tone of the debate so that Congress acts to fix the broken system in a way that upholds America's history as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants. The President reaffirmed that he will continue to work to forge bipartisan consensus and will intensify efforts to lead a civil debate on this issue in the coming weeks and months. Prior to meeting with the President, senior Administration officials also briefed participants on a range of issues of importance to Hispanics and all Americans including the economy and education.

(Funny, I didn't see a photo of Sharry, Noorani, etc. from the last meeting. Was the sole puprose of this one to get that shot?)

Another story (Eva Longoria seems to be the one doing all the talking):

However, actress Eva Longoria, who attended Thursday's meeting, told reporters afterwards that it wasn't a matter of Obama being able to act on his own.

"We like to blame Obama for the inaction, but he can't just disobey the law that's written," Longoria said. She urged Latinos to register to vote and make their voices heard about immigration and other issues.

Did anyone else notice he played the "my hands are tied" card more with this crowd than with the lobbyists? Perhaps he was not as worried about awkward pushback from, e.g., Piolin as opposed to Sharry. The way Longoria bought it and parroted the message shows this president is playing the issue like a fiddle.

"...and continues to do nothing despite having the power. "

Thanks Greg for concurring with the assertion that President Obama has the LEGAL AUTHORITY to issue an Executive Order that can grant some sort of legal protection to millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United States based on certain prerequisites and requirements (most likely a renewable work permit while denying government benefits).

National Security concerns and Congress' inability to pass an immigration reform (an irrelevant institution at this point) support this course of action, adding the fact that during war times the Executive branch has extraordinary powers (to those who need to be educated about this subject, review Title 50 of the Untied States Code: War and National Defense). Besides that, undocumented immigrants must be registered in DHS database and the Selective Service System as well.

The so-called "Baby Boomers" and people chronically dependent on welfare (about half of the populace combined together) know very well that a major disruption in the economy -like the demise of the US Dollar- will have a dramatic impact on their benefits, thus legalizing the undocumented population by presidential decree is a logical step to follow (these people will be heavily taxed and fined).

Check for ongoing events (especially the ones related to the economy) that will accelerate Obama's decision to issue this Executive Order: yesterday -04/29/2011- gold closed at a price of $1563 per ounce.

Shape of things to come? Britain sharply cut immigration over the past year, but instead of unemployment going down, it is going up as UK corporations move jobs abroad, including to places such as Cambridge, MA and Ann Arbor, MI...GDP is stuck around no growth...let this to be a warning to the US as well as an opportunity. Any attempts to cut immigration, particularly skilled immigration will have disastrous consequences...

On the other hand, the Aussies did not such thing and neither did the Canadians...in fact skilled migration to both countries have increased and these are boom times!

Unless Obama has re-election in jeopardy which does not seem to be the case, he is sitting pretty just paying lip service. I do not think he will act on his own with executive authority, I think he will continue to punt on immigration and play political football. If he get a favorable congress he may act if not he will continue to play the " my hands are tied game". He will let the next players continue to play the game and decide the issue. Even if the Latino vote stays home on the 2012 election the repuks are weak so Obama should be ok for reelection.
