GOP MOVING BACK TO CENTER ON IMMIGRATION?

Rate this Entry

There are some positive signs over the last few days but I'm not sure I'd be as optimistic as Stewart Lawrence, but he's made some interesting observations.

And disproportionate share of Irish immigrants in the 1900-1920 was working for Irish-owned firms. The stats are just stats - they don't provide information of what's good and what's not.

Why doesn't the GAO study the misery the H1B workers go through trying to get GC here & hold the dysfunctional USCIS accountable for it? I would like to see recommendations from them. Make the non immgrants & immigrants scapegoats for everything, that's the mantra for everyone.

"The GOP far-right has long attacked a guest worker program as a spur to illegal immigration, while the left has viewed it as a system for indentured labor and super-exploitation, much like the infamous Bracero program of the 1950s and 1960s."

Here's a law review article which supports that both views are correct (guest worker = epic fail):

Many believe that a large-scale guest worker program will help to resolve these problems by providing a lawful channel to divert the flow of unauthorized workers. This article argues that such faith defies the evidence. Namely, a guest worker program will not quell the flow of unauthorized workers or secure the border, and will inevitably be accompanied by exploitation and abuse of guest workers, among other problems, even if it includes greater worker protections than existing programs.

Perhaps instead of being "we know it all arrogant Americans, we can learn from other countries which have similar programs?" Or is it too much to ask of us arrogant Americans, who have no reason to be arrogant given our national state of affairs including exploding debt and deficits?
