BREAKING: STEVE KING DENIED IMMIGRATION SUBCOMMITTEE GAVEL

Rate this Entry

Woohoo! Gallegly is no friend of immigrants, but Steve King is in a league of his own.

From HuffPost Hill:

STEVE KING DENIED IMMIGRATION SUBCOMMITTEE GAVEL - House Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith today selected Elton Gallegly to head up the Immigration Policy and Enforcement subcommittee. The move was a snub to Steve King, the panel's ranking member in the last Congress (when it was named something way longer and way more anchor baby-loving). Spurred on by this insult, King took to the House floor this morning and rambled on for a while about how much he loves the sound of flags dancing in the morning breeze. He also recalled a time that he saw some stupid hippie wiping his stupid hippie glasses with an American flag ("Japanese communists" were on hand to witness this, if you don't believe him). Then again, sadness might not have had anything to do with King's rambling's this morning. He might have said all of these things because he's Steve King. [The Hill]

I'm a little surprised by your enthusiasm. Gallegly is still an 'A' from NumbersUSA and might give the open border lobby less to demagogue (their tactic of choice and an effective one). If the ball is in the pro-enforcement court for two years, this could prove to be a shrewd political move by Lamar Smith to get more of his "seventy percent" issues (or what Frank Sharry calls "lots of smallish-looking measures that add up to a whole lot of harsh enforcement").

Of course, even modest enforcement proposals will have a tough time getting a vote in the Senate let alone signed into law by Obama but with Gallegly the Democrats could be forced to publicly oppose common sense enforcement which is popular with the public rather than easy demagoguery about whatever Steve King might say. You could even get a cleverly drafted DREAM Act Light (but paired with enforcement which Democrats only want to give up in a general CIR amnesty). This could really put the Democrats in an awkward position to oppose and if they go along with it, remove that most sympathetic subset of illegal aliens from their next general amnesty push.

This guy is crazy too but I like how Frank Sherry put it, he was demoted from a King to a Prince, he will still be involved and will make a lot of noise when it comes to immigration.

His legislation is not very different from the one introduced by Robert Stump in the 1990s. However, I cannot figure out whether he is a racist or a communist because he has frequently used the term proletariat.
