AND HERE WE GO - BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP LATEST IMMIGRATION WEDGE ISSUE TO MOVE FRONT AND CENTER

Rate this Entry

When historians try and get in to the nitty gritty of how the Republican Party went the way of the Whigs, they might have a chapter on the GOP's pushing of this issue. There is ZERO chance birthright citizenship is going to be stripped from the Constitution. The reason it is being considered is to score points with far right wackos and don't they always vote Republican anyway? Ah, but in the days when the wackos can dump a moderate GOP member in a primary, there's really no choice is there?

A lot of thoughtful conservatives are pretty conflicted on this issue and just about everyone from the middle to the left is unified in their collective horror that this is even being discussed. Democrats can't really screw this one up as long as they stick together and make sure their party gets the credit for standing behind Latinos (and all Americans who actually think the Constitution is a pretty good thing).

The grown ups in the GOP may privately be appalled that their party has moved in this direction, but they also have largely cowered when it has come to reigning in the xenophobes. They'll pay a terrible price over the next few years for their silence as their party has to deal with the demographics of a changing America. Picking up a lot of seats in the middle of the worst economic decline since the Great Depression may give them a false sense of security that they're now safe, but in "normal" election years, they've got huge challenges awaiting them. As America moves to a minority majority country, having the largest racial and ethnic minorities lined up uniformly against you is not a recipe for maintaining a majority.

As I said, Obama does not have to get congress to pass CIR or the Dream Act to get Hispanic support. The white skin worshipping pagans led by Pierce and King will do it for them...I am very confident that Hispanics will rally behind Obama, CIR or no CIR, Dream Act or no Dream Act.

Wind tester. Not going to happen because borders will never be secure. Singapore, which many call a police state, cannot secure borders and keep illegals out...the only way Singapore is going to stop illegals completely and secure the border is through the adoption of Soviet style guard towers at the border every half a mile or so! Singapore will not adopt those tactics, but the US might if we were running a surplus budget and the government was not broke. The GOP already believes in KGB style communism, wiretapping and spying on US citizens. I am pretty sure, Steve King and Lamar Smith are KGB style commies when it comes to spying on Americans and wiretapping and they might authorize guard towers every half a mile or so..but the problem is they dont have the money!

I am not sure which border he is talking about, the one with mexico or the one with canada. You cannot secure one and keep the other one open. Border security will not work unless its part of a larger strategy includes some sort of reform.

Its interesting to note that MCCAIN breaks his pledge to the tea party, the very first day he begins his fifth term as senator.

Perhaps he is talking about the border between India and China in north-east India/South-west China. For those who want the borders sealed that is the best role model for the GOP..but it has its consequences...the one consequence Indians call Arunachal Pradesh...among the most isolated community in the world....

    http://www.arunachalpradesh.nic.in/

Is that what Arizona wants? Or do they want a one way street like the Aussies and Brits do...no problem with white people travelling and working abroad in non-white countries..but major problem with non-whites travelling to the UK or USA. I have no problem if they are like the people of Arunachal Pradesh. They dont go anywhere, and they dont allow whites or most other Indians to move into their territory....and the way they do it is by not creating jobs or fostering development...but at least it is fairer than what most white people want in this country and in the UK and Australia!

And they are a rich country with very small borders/coastline.
So this notion of fully securing the US borders is pure fantasy.

Just grounds for more corruption, red tape, wasting money and diverting money. That so-called hi-tech virtual fence was going to be a milking cow for unscrupulous politicians w/o being much effective.

SO have King really filed this bill on the house floor or is it just hot air.

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0111/47125.html

The article mentions that according to King's bill, only children of legal residents living permanently in US (I assume it means green card holders) will get citizenship. This means kids whose parents are in non-immigrant visas will be denied citizenship. I guess this bill will never pass, but just the thought that they are planning to exclude a section of legals from birthright citizenship is an eye opener and clearly says who the targets are.

The goal of this thing is just to put the seed of hate in the minds of Americans. These people are loud and few but they have done this in the past with immigration and the american public always buys the product. They will make enough noise just to high jack the issue of immigration. It's funny how the republicans are now suppose to read the constitution before the introduce any bills, but I bet they will conveniently will not read it in the amendments that they don't like, they will just try to cherry pick the constitution. The Immigrant community should prepare some sort of response or to the misinformation that is about to be unleashed in the airwaves. The dems will probably remain silent as they want republicans to continue to hang themselves with Latinos. But if people believe all this lies just like with Healthcare reform is going to be hard to push for Immigration reforms later on...

Because Immigrants = free money, taxation without representation. Ask the undocumented that contribute 7 billion annually and $100 billion and counting to SS. You pay into the system yet you have no rights or benefits, it's a thing of beauty and the Cans love it is the only thing they like about immigrants, they take the punishment like a man and never complaint.

And this is precisely the reason that I have decided to look at other places to work, where you get at least some benefits or maybe a green card in less than 20 yrs!!

That is the international agreement. Students and workers from the US in Singapore pay taxes in Singapore and only pay taxes in the US if the net income is over $82,000. Here at least it is a two way street!

They are counted towards redistricting to pop up racist whites in Arizona, Georgia, Florida and Texas among others. Not very different from slavery times when slaves were counted as half human to pad the electoral college of southern states. What the racist southern whites did not anticipate was a large number of reformed immigrants from the UK, Ireland and Germany flooding the northern states which by 1860 led to the election of Abraham Lincoln. Now pray tell me why they want to end birthright citizenship. It will add another three million to the illegal population and even if they stay they cannot ever vote..but will add more seats in racist states such as Texas, Arizona and Georgia. I will consider supporting the proposal if we only count citizens towards redistricting. That will hurt the GOP, and it is never going to happen.

Wasn't it the Democrats that wanted "ALL Persons Counted", legal or otherwise? Wasn't it the Republicans that didn't want to count those here which were not LPR or Citizen? (Census)

Many here in non-immigrant status do not pay into SS or various other payroll taxes, H-2A as example, other immigrants that do pay into SS can actually claim that money when they retire. Those working without authorization may pay payroll taxes, but they may also file tax forms and receive back more than they have had deducted. The bolstering of SS is but a strawman argument.
