ANTI-IMMIGRATION CENTER FOR IMMIGRATION STUDIES SUGGESTS WILLINGNESS TO COMPROMISE ON DREAM ACT

Rate this Entry

Perhaps there is a chance we'll see some action on the DREAM Act in 2011 albeit with some major tough to accept changes. The key areas likely to change are the education requirement (mandating actually receiving a degree versus simply attending school), the ability to sponsor relatives down the road when DREAM Act finally become citizens (at least 13 years out) and criminal bars on applying.

I would strongly suggests that we not compromise with racists!! They will want more concessions in the future..including making it hard for foreign spouses of US citizens to migrate.

No version of the DREAM Act, even one with the dramatic changes proposed in the CIS article, can pass unless it is paired with substantial immigration enforcement provisions as a counterbalance. Until that happens the Department of Defense should just use the authority it already has under 10 U.S.C. 504(b)(2) to authorize the enlistment of aliens meeting the basic DREAM Act criteria; the DREAM Act is not needed to allow such enlistment.

DeSoto, they already have that program handled (MAVNI - http://www.defense.gov/news/mavni-fact-sheet.pdf) [The Secretary of Defense authorized the military services to recruit certain legal aliens whose skills are considered to be vital to the national interest.], except they still, by law, can not accept those here in violation of immigration law, look up SOF Agreements.

Wait, so these common sense measures were not in the original DREAM bill? No wonder it failed!

As much as lots of people want DREAM to be a reality this seems like a hand me down crumbs from republicans....DREAM was already watered down but what's a little more!!! In the end is about reforming the broken system not pass a bill that helps the minimal amount of people possible. It gets to a point when is no longer a compromise but more like my way or the highway or as they say the republican way.

These are common sense provisions and they should have been included in the original Dream Act!!!

    Interesting article...

Obama does not have to worry about passage of any immigration legislation. He just needs to keep up the rhetoric. The GOP will shoot itself in the head beginning with the anchor baby legislations at the state level this coming wednesday...the focus wont be on Obama in most states, it will be on the GOP!

With 25 sitting democrats in the senate up for re-election in 2012, this is advice is nothing but a recipe for disaster.

Repeat of 1996! GOP will commit suicide without Obama lifting a finger...immigration or not, Dems will at least loose two, perhaps three seats and could loose as much as six or seven if Snowe is not teabagged and Ensign quits.

Republicans figured this one out long time ago - all those voter ID laws are aimed at 13 million Americans who can't prove who they are, not at immigrants. There is like 2 proven cases of immigrants voting in the whole US in the last 10 years, so that makes huge difference, right?
  13. George Chell's Avatar
This only happen to Hispanics. If it happens to black people, you can be certain that Al Sharpton will show up!

They will try and purge black people from voter rolls...but Al Sharpton will show up!

Liquid: Wrong. Believe me, I am intimately familiar with MAVNI. I would ask you to look at 10 USC 504(b)(2). The Secretary of Defense could solve Cesar Vargas' problem tomorrow. The SOF agreements have nothing to do with it. If the Secretary of Defense wanted to he could announce, tomorrow, under 10 USC 504(b)(2), that even illegal aliens described in the DREAM Act could enlist in the military.
