One more thing..Obama does not have to worry about the Hispanic vote and he will not loose DC, NY, MD, MA, VT, RI, IL, CA, WA, OR or HI..if he wins those states, he is nearly half way there! But, most important I am certain in order to please the tea partiers who desparately want to keep this country majority white, the GOP will antagonize the Hispanics...and they are just warming up!

They are focusing on primaries for now, we can expect them wooing Hispanic and changing tones after the nomination is settled but I hope Hispanic and all immigrant voters realize it sooner. Having said this i am equally dissappointed with dems and President Obama for their lip service but I appauld Sen. Reid's effort for Dream Act although i believe he could have achieved much more it the leadership has got their act together.

We will see how forcefully President Obama will come out for immigration reform in his SOTU, will their be same passen for immigration as he showed for HCR, that os yet to come and believe help all immigrant friendly voters give a clear chioce for 2012.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all.

Hope 2011 will be very productive year for immigrants. Can we have Lame Duck sesdion for the entire 2011?

That is good news. I think non-controversial bills like visa recapture where we don't add visas but just recycle unused ones that should have been given but not due to the fault of the inefficiency of the system may have a chance.

Not surprised he want's E-verify. I think that is good starting point for compromise and to get smaller bills in.

Speaking of how productive the not so lame duck session. Hope Schumer is right in saying that the first half of 2011 would be unusually be productive.

And I do hope that issues with 70% public approval rating does get done as Lamar Smith noted,

None of these guys want to pen themselves up for attacks in the primary's pure political play. In the primaries they will fight for the nomination to the far right who ever wins then will make a pitch to try to get up the that 40% of the hispanic vote that George W won to have a fighting chance against Obama. Some of them may actually be making calculations to try to win without courting hispanics, it will be hard to do, specially since the African American vote will come out and stand with the president. The republicans may also be banking that hispanics are soo disappointed at the dems that may just stay home and give them a fighting chance.

" Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), an immigration hard-liner.

"If he is not willing to do it -- there is a lot of public support for reducing legal immigration -- he is going to find he will be pressured on that issue," said Steven Camarota, director of research for the Center for Immigration Studies.

Smith's early emphasis on jobs flows from the House Republican leadership. Michael Steel, spokesman for incoming House Speaker John Boehner, said Republicans "heard -- loudly and clearly -- that the biggest issue right now is jobs. So I imagine that will be our priority in a number of issue areas.""

I guess this proves what George Chell has been saying all along if it was not for illegal immigration the Cans would have targeted legal immigration. I guess now they are going to do both...

    At least they will try!

"Louisiana stands to lose clout in Congress, while states that welcome illegal immigrants stand to unfairly benefit from artificially inflated population totals," he said.

But Vitter will not do anything about it as long as counting illegal immigrants helps elect a GOP President (George Bush in 2000) or gets more Republicans elected in congress. I will consider supporting birthright citizenship restrictions if the GOP is willing to amend the constitution to take into consideration only Citizens for re-districting purposes. As it stands now, GOP wants its cake and eat it too. Preventing the so-called "anchor babies" from becoming citizens mean only one thing: racist southern whites will have power as more and more illegal babies are counted towards re-districting but unlike in the past, they wont be allowed to vote! Without counting illegals or legal residents, Florida will have five fewer electoral votes, Texas six fewer, Georgia three fewere, SC one fewer and CA eight fewer...and yes Utah, one fewer..states such as NY, PA, IL, WI and MA will add seats, which if it were the case would have helped elect Al Gore as President in 2000!

Unused because jobs are moving abroad!

Finally, what are the implications of these discussions? Obama does not have to push for any immigration bill. The GOP has the House...they will hang themselves and the scared Hispanics will come running back to Obama. Only thing Obama needs to worry about is the oil prices!

Thanks AV, for posting the article about dangers of declining population. It should be shown every time someone says that deporting 12 million people will free up 12 million jobs. In fact, it would probably cause total job decline of several more million.

Yeah apparently that will be the new republican slogan when speaking against immigration, since "it's all about jobs".
