OBAMA TO ADDRESS IMMIGRATION PLANS IN STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

Rate this Entry

The President has started revealing his plans on immigration for the next year. It sounds like he's planning on trying a do-over with Congress and attempting again to get a comprehensive immigration bill passed. He'll make the case for this in his State of the Union Address. I'm happy the President is still interested in working for change, I sincerely hope he is not making passing a reform bill his SOLE strategy. I'm reminded of Presidents in the past who regularly spoke in favor of something, but you just knew they didn't really care and were just trying to appease a constituency. I'm reminded of Ronald Reagan used to regularly speak out in favor of a constitutional amendment to ban abortion, but he never really stuck his neck out on the issue.

    Unlike David Frum,

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/OPINION/12/20/frum.immigration.debate/index.html

somehow I doubt Obama will address the most fundamental policy issues--why have such high immigration? How is it that such a high percentage of total immigration is illegal? Is it good policy to lower the education and skill level of the workforce through immigraton? Should so much of our immigration be from a single country/region?

Luis Gutierrez will be counting the words (and surely there will be more of them than last time) but does anyone expect much more than his regular platitudes, short on details? Greg certainly has reason to wonder if Obama is "just trying to appease a constituency" or as Bruce Morrison asks "Was this about passing the DREAM Act, or was this about telling Hispanics that Democrats love them and Republicans hate them?"

As for "border security" Republicans, do you realize that a significant percentage of illegal aliens enter legally? What do you propose that will prevent long-term illegal presence of the type which produces DREAM Act situations? The Democrats didn't even bother to address this, but there needs to more than an honor system or else nothing will change no matter what you do at the border.

Is administrative relief the only way out ?

"somehow I doubt Obama will address the most fundamental policy issues--why have such high immigration?"

Shall we look at the facts, maybe? Immigration in the last decade, including illegal immigration, as a percent of population was about one quarter of that in 1880-1920. Population growth over 2000 in the US, according to the last Census was a 9.7%. Between 1990 and 2000 the population grew at 13.2%. The percentage growth in the last decade is the second lowest 10 year period in the past century, higher only than the growth in the 1930s.

Maybe the question should be why immigration to the US is so low?

"How is it that such a high percentage of total immigration is illegal?"

Easy question. Because the US does not let people immigrate legally, they have no choice but to come illegally.

"Is it good policy to lower the education and skill level of the workforce through immigraton?"

It is just a result of immigration policies in the US - don't let anyone in, so those who don't care about their immigration status will come in larger numbers. Remember, you can't regulate overall volume of immigration, you can only regulate those who come in legally.

"Should so much of our immigration be from a single country/region?"

Because high immigration would not be a problem if all of them were white, right? Thanks for showing your true colors, as all you care is to keep non whites out.

Sounds like his strategy will be heavy PR on Immigration for 2012!!! Lots of talk but little to show for... not sure if the immigrant community would be ignited or turned off by another defeat on immigration!!!

Well Jack perhaps you should review our country's history a bit...these same arguments were made about the Irish, Italian and Polish immigrants, literally. See how that turned out!!!

"Was this about passing the DREAM Act, or was this about telling Hispanics that Democrats love them and Republicans hate them?" Well Jack it could also be about solving problems... heard of that ever, there are 12 million or so immigrants living in the US in this situation and clearly even you would admit that deporting them all is not really the way to go here!!! I may be assuming too much of you here.

"The Democrats didn't even bother to address this, but there needs to more than an honor system or else nothing will change no matter what you do at the border."

For the past 10 years it has been all enforcement and still nothing to show for in the way of results!!! Maybe there is a point here about fixing the system in a way that actually you are trying a different route to solve the immigration problem. It's CRAZY to keep doing the SAME thing and expect a different result....unless you are crazy, don't really care to solve the problem or just plain stupid!!!

AV, my understanding is that Jack is very content with where the situation is today. He gets to have cheap labor, while these people pay into the government coffers without being eligible for the benefits. In fact, he wants more illegal immigration, and thus the repeal of the 14th amendment.

His slogan is: "No amnesty! We need more slaves!"

Absolutely it should be the slogan for both parties regarding immigration... that is why they keep dragging it out!!!

I agree to this, include the legal non immigrants as the exploited folk.

Try getting a NIV, I doubt if you would qualify. Assuming you beat the odds and get it and you then violate its terms you are subject to 3/10 year bars. Not exactly, an honor system!!

I suppose if you had your way you would restrict peoples abiliity to travel internationally. The nations of the Iron Country used to do that too. East Germany even built a wall but people still made it across that barrier.
