SCHUMACHER-MATOS: DREAM ACT LATEST IN LONG HISTORY OF SHAMEFUL ACTS IN CONGRESS

Rate this Entry

Washington Post columnist Edward Schumacher-Matos compares the vote to the Chinese Exclusion Act, the Indian Removal Act, the Fugitive Slave Law and other acts of Congress that reflect hate-filled periods in American history. And just like in those days, today's antis will insist racism has nothing to do with it (even though it has everything to do with it).

If the antis insist that this has nothing to do with racism, but everything to do with university slots and jobs, why aren't they protesting outsourcing or deep cuts in education expenditures that was initiated by Governor Christie? The fact is antis dont care about jobs for Americans. They are now desparately trying to keep the country white. In the end the whites will become a minority in this country, if not in 2050, by 2070...they will in the end pay for transporting human beings in cargo holds across the Atlantic and for Jim Crowe!

It's clearly another example how America does not want to learn the lesson on Racism. We just move down to the next group of people perceived as "different". Right now it seems that Hispanics and Muslims are out of favor....

Good article but it just seems that the antis have successfully poison the debate and muddy the waters for good, when they introduced the amnesty word to anything that is related to immigration. People stop analyzing the facts and issue and automatically say NO!!! Combine that with the FOX NEWS audience and the fact that they are the most misinformed group of people and you got a pretty good script for success defeating anything immigration.

"India's technicians and engineers who came here sent word back home that it's hard now," Haub added. "The IT industry is not the golden goose it's been in the past."

High skills moving abroad is not good news. Common sense now dictates that if you want to drive taxi, stay in US. If you want career rise in management/IT/Research etc move to emerging countries. Purchasing power of dollar has reduced drastically while salaries in US have stagnated. Big loss for immigrants. Bill Gates and several other intelligent people mentioned about practically stapling green card to people graduating from MS here. Will politicians be too late?

I am seeing quite a few doctors move back to India. That is one field where I didn't expect people to move back.

Adi I think you have very valid points however I doubt that your analysis would persuade politicians to change their stand on fixing the immigration system, they do not guide themselves by facts!! In addition you do not want legal Immigrants to be seen as users, meaning that you want be here because of your own personal benefit but really you'll go to the next best thing when the winds change and don't really care about the country.

Forget about immigrants, just look at Americans moving in droves to other countries and take advantage of opportunities in other countries. Next big thing will then be in other countries and innovation will be to solve problems of people in BRIC countries rather than US consumers.

And yes US has to keep itself attractive when competing for human resource, especially for high skilled human resource. It is competing with lot of countries around the world for this short supply. Two huge recessions within a decade have already put a dent in that image, while country like China calls 8% growth a 'slowdown'. Immigration is a hassle. Instead of focusing on their work, they are forced to move around this maze of immigration.

What's wrong with that? It's called being opportunistic.

Interestingly Hispanics were never a category during the Jim Crowe era. Then Civil Rights and Affirmative Action were established. However, many did not like the idea of hiring black people and Asians (particularly women) were fewer in number and East Asians definitely did not look white. So, they created a Hispanic category back in 1970, I believe..so that the employers could hire white looking people. Two decades ago after complaints from Asians and blacks a consulting firm doing conservation work was investigated by EEOC for hiring only white people. Turned out one third of these white people were Hispanics from Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, Costa Rica, etc...and the charges were dropped. So, Hispanic category is an American invention. Most Hispanics are considered white in Europe and Australia!

    The Absolute truth:

"In this paper, we simulate the long-run effects of migrant flows on wages of highskilled and low-skilled non-migrants in a set of countries using an aggregate model of national economies. New in this literature we calcualte the wage effect of emigration as well as immigration. We focus on Europe and compare the outcomes for large Western European countries with those of other key destination countries both in the OECD and outside the OECD. Our analysis builds on an improved database of bilateral stocks and net migration flows of immigrants and emigrants by education level for the years 1990 through 2000. We find that all European countries experienced a decrease in
their average wages and a worsening of their wage inequality because of emigration. Whereas, contrary to the popular belief, immigration had nearly equal but opposite effects: positive on average wages and reducing wage inequality of non-movers. These patterns hold true using a range of parameters for our simulations, accounting for the estimates of undocumented immigrants, and correcting for the quality of schooling and/or labor-market downgrading of skills. In terms of wage outcomes, it follows that prevalent public fears in European countries are misplaced; immigration has had a
positive average wage effect on native workers. Some concerns should be focused on the wage effect of emigration, instead."

I don't think there is anything wrong about being opportunistic (in fact, I think it is quite rational), however, you may not want to advertise it while asking for higher quota numbers. It will not win you any votes, and it will sure lose quite a few. Just a smart communication strategy.

Exactly that was my point!!! I agree with being opportunistic we all want to do better in life and that is why people are trying to go thru the hell of the Immigration process.

The Republicans were able to compromise any many of the initiatives that the Dems put forth in the lame duck session: DADT, START, tax cuts, and it looks like even the 9/11 bill. Everything EXCEPT the DREAM Act. That says a lot.
