Newt Gingrich and Jeb Bush are smart politicians....

....and so are Haley Barbour and Gary Johnson. Last time Bush's old man liberalized immigration in 1990, we saw the longest peace time boom which lasted ten years. Corporations created jobs and kept them in this country while foreign firms were falling over each other to invest here and create more jobs. At its peak in 1998-99 US economy created nearly 500,000 jobs a month driven by foreign investment. Now, the UK is doing just the opposite. Cutting education and students are going abroad in search of lower fees...to places such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, Canada and even the US. Cameron and his clowns placed a cap on skilled migrants reducing future skills even further. Jobs will move out of the UK and Singapore and Hong Kong along with the Aussies are smelling blood and circling like sharks to grab these jobs. Will the US compete for these jobs or will morons such as Sanders, Grassley, Lamar Smith, Steve King and Dick Durbin still live in their delusional or narcotics induced state believing that one less immigrant means one more job for an American?

Jeb Bush has always been on of the few pro immigration republicans, just like his brother and father. Newt is just trying to give himself a shot at a presidential bid, as a good opportunist he senses that Hispanics are not too thrilled with the Obama results on Immigration so far.... He probably figures in his political calculations, if he can get his numbers to say the 40% of the Hispanic vote(sames as George W) in a general election he has a shot at winning. So he is going to talk this book from here until the nomination fight...my sense is that the retardicans will tone down the hate rhetoric a bit specially to create space between the extreme right and more center candidates. Since he is on records now on this it will be hard to walk back....

OTOH, Dick Lugar tries to back away from the DREAMers:

"Yet Durbin continues to lose onetime Republican backers. Support from Indiana Sen. Dick Lugar, who co-sponsored a version of the bill as recently as September, is now uncertain, with his spokesman saying the senator "doesn't like the political games being played" and is exploring his options."

Wasn't Lugar quoted yesterday as saying that "the repubs can't just be the party on NO...." It is beyond me why people like Dorgan and others that are retiring would not support this, but I guess it's all part of the political game of football when it comes to Immigration.

This isn't really a surprise: the last major immigration overhaul took place under Reagan. The number of available H1B visas collapsed under Clinton, who did nothing to stop it. The Bush administration had a quite a few measures in the pipeline to help legal, skilled immigration before the discussion was muddled by undocumented aliens.

As a matter of fact, it was the Bush admin's 2006 push that stirred up the debate that has continued until now. Karl Rove has written repeatedly about the importance of the immigrant community to the GOP's future.

The Democrats actually poisoned the well by changing the discourse to lump all immigrants - legal and undocumented - into a single group. The result was that the word "immigrant" became a 4 letter word in the US, and CIR excited enough nativist activism to kill any hope of reform.

The Obama admin has done very little to help legal immigrants besides a few leaked memos, instead waiting on some wishful "bipartisan" process that it was unwilling to even start.

Now the Republicans have the ball, hopefully they can get it right this time.

Skilled immigrant, of course, it was not Bill Clinton who managed to increase H1B caps to 165K and 195K for a few years, who signed AC21 law a couple of months before leaving the office, and who imposed 3/10 admissibility bars on illegal immigrants. Truthiness all over the place.

Right because you have sooo much to offer them politically in 2012 that they just can't wait to move on this.....

    @ Skilled immigrant.

I totally agree with you, you have hit the nail. Dems will not do ANYTHING for legal as they are pro-union. They will never increase H1-B cap or fix the visa retrogression. repubs look at skilled immigrants as a way for improving the economy, which is true. Questions is: How far and how interested are the repubs in pushing for legal immigration in 2011, when they gt hold of the house. I am not waiting for 2012 and other false promises. Their are other places that welcome skilled immigrants, barring UK now .

    Cheers,

SG, of course, don't let puny little facts get in the way of truthiness.
