VILLAGE VOICE: DON'T TRUST FAIR'S NUMBERS

Rate this Entry
The Village Voice has an excellent report reviewing how FAIR, NumbersUSA and the Center for Immigration Studies come up with the numbers that they tout in their stories regarding the cost of illegal immigration. Read the report at http://www.villagevoice.com/2010-12-01/news/fairy-y-tales/ .

I saw Ed Gallespi(sorry if I did not spell his name correctly)on Meet the Press and the way the republicans are attacking this is as subsidies to illegal immigrants and the in state tuition argument, since we are in harsh economic times they will try to go for the economic argument... hopefully that CBO report can counter that!!

"U.N. reports that the world population may stabilize by 2300 because fertility rates are trending downward."

Until then, what's a few billion worldwide and hundred million in the U.S.?

"If we account for the small fiscal burden that unauthorized immigrants impose, the overall economic benefit is close enough to zero to be essentially a wash."

Hey, at least she cites a no benefit or FISCAL burden study like that rather than one saying it's zillions of dollars benefit. That's what you get in most articles with the goal of discrediting skeptics of mass immigration policy.

Most people don't want higher total immigration, let alone illegal immigration. That's why we get ridiculous benefit statistics from outfits biased in favor of higher/unlimited immigration and against enforcing immigration law. They have to spin their position as economically essential because they know most people are not otherwise in favor of it.

"A (fiscal) wash" isn't nearly enough to convince most people that illegal immigration is nothing to be concerned about. There are plenty of non-economic and other economic factors (e.g., employment competition and lowering of wages).
