RECORD NUMBER OF FOREIGN STUDENTS COMING TO US

Rate this Entry

The New York Times reports that nearly 700,000 foreign students came to the US last year and that for the first time, Chinese students were the number one nationality. India previously held that distinction. Indian students were up 1.6% last year compared to a nearly 30% jump in Chinese students.

Two reasons: Demand pull from the US, as education budget cuts, high dropout rates and general attitude towards education take their toll. Basically, universities requested the State Department to go easy on 214(b) unless the government wanted the univerisities to come for TARP money...looks like Unis have done as well as they have due to foreign student fees.

Cost/bigotry push: Students generally going to the UK and Australia are shifting towards the US and Canada, because they find the countries there unwelcoming.

Of course Americans demand privilege. "You have to admit us because we are in-state, whether we are qualified or not, but we wont pay for it!" This is the attitude you will find in states such as Colorado.

They will get a great education and then go back home and contribute to that country's economic growth.....

Please also mention about the record number of students leaving as well. I personally know about 11 students who left because of the bad job scene for international students or the delay in the immigration process.
