ELECTION HOLDS SILVER LININGS FOR PRO-IMMIGRANTS

Rate this Entry

Obviously, the prospects for major immigration reform legislation are being dealt a blow this evening. But it looks like the lord of the anti-immigrants - Tom Tancredo - is going down to defeat in the Colorado governor's race. Marco Rubio seemed to push an Arizona-like law for Florida in the election campaign, but his speech this evening was all about the immigrant dream. Perhaps he'll follow in Mel Martinez's footsteps and lead in re-establishing a pro-immigration Republican caucus. Exit polls are showing that immigration was NOT driving most voters decisions.

And it's a little early to call it, but it also looks like South Carolina's "You Lie!" Joe Wilson may be going down to defeat.

[UPDATE: Joe Wilson is now ahead. Oh well.]

It's also now official that Harry Reid won over Sharron Angle. I consider this an upset since everyone practically left him for dead already.

It wasn't even down the wire. He clinched the win with just 70% of votes coming in. 51-46%

The tea party express were shocked.

The agenda in the Senate is controlled by the Majority Leader and the Senate Leader's re-election is a great piece of news for the pros and a devastating blow for the haters!

Incidentally, the exit poll shows that the Hispanics didn't turn out for the Senate Leader and out of those that voted an amazing 30% voted for Angle (Reid only got 68% of the Hispanic vote while he garnered 79% of the Asian vote). Are they stupid?

Given the above, Reid should FIRST push legal reform in the lame duck session and then re-visit DREAM/CIR which given their past failures have no little chance of passing.

I agree on everything you said. And yes, I think Hispanics who voted for Angle are STUPID.

Reid should definitely consider doing piece-meal LEGAl reforms first before even considering the DREAM Act and CIR. With so little time in the lameduck session and with 1/3 of Hispanics voting for his opponent and/or staying home he shouldn't prioritize DREAM and CIR. Take it up next year by all means.

    "and/or staying home"

Per census estimate above 26.5% of Nevada's population is Hispanic. Per my earlier link, Hispanics were only 15% of the voters. Admittedly, some of the 26.5% might be LPRs. Given where Angle was and where Reid was that is a disgrace. I agree with your post.

From Northern Virginia to Nevada, Sic Semper Angleis....

"Hispanic voters proved key to Reid's victory.

Despite earlier polling data that indicated Hispanics would skip this election, exit polls showed they accounted for a record 16 percent of total voters.

That turnout was likely backlash to an ad aired by a Republican operative explicitly telling Hispanics not to vote, as well as inflammatory ads from Angle's campaign that used images of Hispanic youth dressed as gang members.

Xavier Caballos, a Mexican immigrant and Las Vegas Democrat who voted for Reid, said Angle had tried to make people like him look dangerous.

"That was the final straw," said Gilberto Ramirez, a Reno concrete worker who recently obtained his citizenship and voted for the first time. "She was depicting me as a gang member. I served seven years in the Marine Corps.""

Immigration is dead in ll fronts until after 2012 and depending on what happens on that election. Lame Duck Congress may try to do something but that would be it...

I think the Hispanic vote was key to Reid's victory despite the fact that it may have been smaller than it's potential size. Yet this sector of the population will continue to grow out west and Reid would be stupid to take the split of the vote personal and act against that sector of the population out of spike. That is politics not everyone will vote for you but he did get the majority of Hispanics and that is the important read on his re-election. Why some voted for Angle maybe strange but the Tea Party did appeal to parts of America all over the place, Hispanics are no different than other people.

I agree with Jim & USC, the lame duck session could pass non controversial legislation like visa recapture & excluding EB beneficiaries from the visa count so the back log can be reduced. If implemented these measures will significantly reduce the backlog. But as everyone is aware no one on the Hill is left with any common sense or likewise solutions.

i was reading and it look like that the Latino vote deliver the win in Nevada and it was a big factor.
Also, Karl Rove was behind the GOP win, and he really understand how it is important is the immigration
