Immigrants contribute to understanding between people and cultures. In addition, they contribute disproportionately to STEM. No better prrof than the two immigrants who were today awarded the Physics Noble prize:

This does not go into the heads of the rednecks in the UK government who insist on a cap of 200 skilled workers a year from the US!

George, you are being mislead by media reports, there is no cap of 200 either for the US or India. There is a temporary overall cap of 20,400 on Tier 2 applications (those applying under the point system).

The temporary cap is actually 24,100, see below:

    http://www.workpermit.com/news/2010-06-28/uk/uk-immigration-cap-will-go-ahead-on-19-july.htm

Also, my post is also inaccurate in that the point system is Tier 1 and not Tier 2. Tier 2 is employer sponsored immigrants (our EB system).

OK. But, cap on skilled migration is still a cap!

First American to break the UK's lock on Nobel prizes is Japanese immigrant (and a candidate for immigrant of the day):

    http://www.wthr.com/story/13275956/purdue-professor-wins-noble-prize-in-chemistry

    Thus far the score-card reads:

    Immigrants 3.
    Native American 1
    Native Britisher 1
    Native Japanese 1

As a diehard Boilermaker, I can only say, GO PURDUE!!!

Al Overhauser has apparently been in the running for the Physics Nobel for a while, George. Just FYI.

Think his folks migrated as kids from Germany. Actually know him.

Just an FYI. One of the American Nobel price winner for Chemistry is now enjoying his retirement days in the Philippines together with his wife.

He really is smart. Retiring in the Philippines aside for the reason that his wife is Filipino where your retirement money will be stretched is smart and there's absolutely no worry about the .5 million $ he will be receiving from the Nobel price not lasting his lifetime unlike the babyboomers in the America where they worry all the time of their 401ks. pensions and SS will even be enough. They also have to worry about politicians who just wants them to just drop dead and even deprive them of nurses and doctors by not doing something about the nursing and physician shortage.

Would not be surprised if a university in SG and other nearby asian countries offers him a teaching job.

Given that he is an immigrant to the Philippines and today's announcement regarding the Literature prize to a Peruvian, who appears to live all over the world, the revised score-card is as follows:

    Immigrants: 5
    Native Britisher: 1
    Native Japanese: 1

The above under-scores that all nations need to eliminate/minimize barriers to the movement of people.
