WHY ATTACHING THE DREAM ACT TO THE DEFENSE BUDGET BILL IS APPROPRIATE

Rate this Entry

The Wall Street Journal quotes my friend Margaret Stock who explains why.

In an interview, Rep. Steve King (R., Iowa) accused Sen. Reid of attempting to use a "must-pass" defense bill to ram through an amnesty.

Supporters of the bill, including many with close ties to the military and higher education, see it differently.

"Passage of the Dream Act would be extremely beneficial to the U.S. military and the country as a whole," said Margaret Stock, a retired West Point professor who studies immigrants in the military. She said it made "perfect" sense to attach it to the defense-authorization bill.

Louis Caldera, secretary of the Army under President Bill Clinton, said that as they struggled to meet recruiting goals, "recruiters at stations were telling me it would be extremely valuable for these patriotic people to be allowed to serve our country."

Immigrants have been eligible to enlist in the U.S. military since the Revolutionary War. As of June 2009, foreign-born individuals represented 8% of the 1.4 million military personnel on active duty in the U.S. armed forces.

Pentagon officials and retired military officials coming out not only for support but saying that it should be in the Defense bill should be the cover Reid and other advocates need. I think there is momentum for passing the DREAM Act. McCain and the other Republicans are now against the wall with regards to this issue. If they are smart, they should let DREAM Act pass but ask that Don't ask Don't tell not be repealed. That's the easy and smart way. If they want it do it the hard way, there is a possibility that not only the DREAM Act passes but DADT be repealed as well. They should compromise and get something out of this whole thing. There is clearly a momentum for the DREAM Act.

The antis and republicans will never see it this way regardless of the facts and evidence to the contrary.... why waste time trying to convince these people. They used this tactic time and time again during the Bush years, they know the play is in their playbook too, they only cry foul when someone else uses it.... Let's hope the dems learned something from the healthcare debate.

It is a weird one to attach to the Defence Appropriation bill, however, if the Pentagon wants it (and I do believe they do), it may be an option. I feel like a better case should be made for inclusion of this bill.

Dems debate everyhting and anything endlessly. They dont learn anything and Obama does not know how to make these people fall in line. They are still debating on how to proceed about "Middle Class Tax cuts", Republicans have a simple strategy of "Tax Cuts acorss the board". Whatever happened to HOPE AND CHANGE On which I was sold...

The antis and their supporters (GOP and Democrats) have one overriding goal...try to hang on to an America of the past, that is never going to come back.....

"Southern California children of the 50s and 60s met the Christmas season by watching TV coverage of the Santa Claus Lane Christmas Parade, hosted by George Putnam. And New Years' Day meant George Putnam on horseback in the Tournament of Roses Parade, complete with cowboy regalia. In later years, George was often voted "Grand Marshal" to lead the parade.

Oh yes, those were the days my friends. Days when we were one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all. And, George Putnam led Southern California listeners with his daily reporting. Unlike today's broadcasters, you could always believe what George Putnam reported."

Forget racism or xenophobia..their running up the national debt and the US dependence on China to fill public coffers had made it sure that the America they long for will never come back....

Yes, I was told that DADT will be repealed , Guantanmo will be closed , tax cuts will only be for middle class , CIR will be introduced with in one year of Mr. Obama getting into office. Whatever happened to the rhetoric of healing the oceans etc, I dont even want to go there.

Yes , I rooted for Hillary but eventually supported Obama . I have a reason to be angry with Dems for not delivering anything they promised despite of having greatest power in a generation.

Luckily , I am not one of those who is looking for unemployment insurance or COBRA subsidies after 99 weeks.

Look at the progress of Loan modifications by treasury dept and banks together. Obama is supposed to make Government smarter and efficient .

Only Immigration bill he did is to increase the H1B fees to seal the border and more deportations and raids on businesses.

I guess Bush did more to immigration than Obama ... Prove me wrong on this ...

"I guess Bush did more to immigration than Obama ... Prove me wrong on this ... "

How long did Bush take to do that much of work on Immigration as you mentioned? 8 years, and its not even 2 years and you want whole lot more from BAM.

No doubt! I am as angry as you are, I hope DEMS wont loose big this November, if they have to then I would like to get rid of those who are pain and get progressive next time around.

The word "progressive" in context of immigration scares hell out of me .

Chuck Shumer , Dick Durbin , Bingaman , Dorgan to name few are progressives .

I am not a big fan of Bush Jr, but I give him credit for trying to push immigration bills forward. It was more than Obama has done so far. So far (!). Please remember that most Bush's good work was done in the second term.

Regarding other things you mentioned. The main differentiating issue for Obama was health care, and he has done quite a bit of work there. DADT is on it's way out, so is Gitmo. It's a big country, things don't change overnight.

You may be pissed with "progressives", but let's not compare them to Sessions, "no birthright" Graham, "illegal immigratns are beheading people" Brewer, and other southern Republicans. You know yourself they will only vote to make immigration system worse for everyone, not better. Protectionist Durbin may not be anyone's favorite, but at least he can be negotiated with.

Exactly , At least we can agree on this I guess . . I guess , we have to choose between lesser of two evils. Mr. Durbin may be insane but Mr. Sessions is outright evil.

A progressive friend of mine was complaining about Obama and I myself had to remind him of alternative Ms. Palin .

All due to Rahm Immanuel. A swift kick in the rear of the Dems on November 3, a loss of 45 seats in the House and seven seats in the Senate would lead to Immanuel's dismissal. If it does not Obama will be a one term President!

Lamar Smith and Steve King are even worse. But, that is what we really need to remind people how bad the GOP are. Dont like Sessions, those in CA and WA get out, get your butt in gear and vote for Boxer and Murray. If those two win, Dems will have at least 51 seats in the Senate..also those in Nevada, work hard to keep Sharon Angle out!

David Axelrod and Valeri Jarret should be out as well. They may be good but ability to get things done is more important.

"I am not a big fan of Bush Jr, but I give him credit for trying to push immigration bills forward."

Some of his achievements on this front:

    (a) Attempted to reduce MAP for B1/B2 from 180 days to 60 days. Pros were able to thwart the implementation of this immigrant "friendly" measure only due to the intervention of Jeb Bush.

    (b) Implemented finger-printing of Visitors to this country and in the dying days of his administration also extended it to Permamnent Residents.

    (c) Made it impossible for USCs visiting countries of their birth to file for their immediate relatives at the local Embassy.

    (d) Forced the flawed e-Verify on the US.

Obama is a politician. Unlike many, he knows right from wrong, but he chooses his battles very carefully. He is also very reactive, so the only way to get him to act on something he knows needed to be acted upon is to provoke his reaction with some sort of public outcry. It is hard to do in immigration, though, where most victims can't freely express their views. In terms of effective measures all I can think of is to get Lady Gaga on the bandwagon ;-)

I sense at some point Obama will write a great book about all the great things he should have done...
