IS DREAM BACK ON THE TABLE?

Rate this Entry

Readers have already posted in the comments, but it's worth bumping up to its own post. Harry Reid is going to try to get a vote as early as next week to include the DREAM Act on a Department of Defense appropriations bill. The measure could fail because Republicans who are potential supporters but afraid to take a pro-immigration position could argue that including the measure in the Defense bill is the wrong way to proceed. We shall see...

If you ask me, other piece-meal bills aside from DREAM should also be attached to it. It's not like this kind of strategy has not been used by the Republicans before. Give us a break Republicans.

With nutcases such as Christine O'Donnell and Sharon Angle taking over the GOP any compromise before the elections seem unlikley!

How do any of the immigration measures "should" be attached to a DOD appropriations bill? The practice of rolling totally unrelated things just get together is a total insanity. DREAM should be voted on its own, and I sure hope it goes through.

Republicans could not argue their traditional Pro-defense/security position if they block the defense bill. They would become to vulnerable as no being for the troops!! This tactic is worth a try!!!

If the Dems dont run this youtube in Delaware and for that matter in places such as Wisconsin and Kentucky, they deserve to loose!

Good one George!! is beyond reasoning why would you want to vote for a nut job like this... but my guess is that the understanding of a Senator's responsibility is not high on the priorities, they may as well nominate that other Pastor from FLA....

If the DREAM act is passed, many "legally here" kids may apply for Green card under DREAM.

Is it not the embarassment to the whole immigration system?

"Is it not the embarassment to the whole immigration system?"

Yes it is & the lawmakers do not care. THE sole intent of the DREAM Act is to get votes, once these students get the GC & eventually citizenship they will file for their illegal parents who are either in the US or outside. That's a few million votes for the Dems. They just want to exploit the legals with the SS, Medicare etc. with nothing in return.

Who said life was fair... we should all be happy that some people are getting help!!! Just because not all immigrants are getting help does not make DREAM wrong.... come on people get those selfish feelings a side they do not help anyone not even you!!!

BREAKING NEWS !! SEN MENENDEZ TO INTRODUCE CIR !!!
  12. My 2 cents's Avatar
AV, it's not that I don't care for these students. Why are they not working on fixing the quota system for the EB & FB categories before the DREAM Act. The legals always get the raw deal, while those who are here illegally get the first shot in the reform. I am just stating the fact & it hurts me & thousands of legals waiting in limbo.

It isn't going anywhere. The Dems will most likely get 60 seats in the Senate, could even have a bare majority in the House after the elections. But I do not expect anything to happen even in that scenario on the immigration front.
  14. Legal and no longer waiting's Avatar
My 2 cents - it is just the reality, you can either accept it or fume about it forever. If you want piecemeal, you need to prepare yourself that the first several bills will be about legalization in some shape or form.

Harry Reid should also greatly consider attaching a visa recapture bill as well. Let's see how the Republicans and their media arm Fox News handle that. They've been demonizing the DREAM Act ever since news broke of Reid's plans.

Visa recapture is much less controversial since it just adds un-used/wasted visa numbers that are suppose to be allocated anyway throughout the years but left unused because of gross inefficiencies by USCIS. Let's see if they really mean it when they say they are for legal immigration by letting a visa recapture bill be attached to the Dept. of Defense appropriations bill and have that passed.

I hear you but if they are doing piece meal and decided to start somewhere else other than with the legals is because political implications, remember we are in the silly season of elections.... right now all moves are about motivating large blocks of people to come out to vote. If you are the dems you want hispanics to come out to vote, legal immigrants can't vote right now. But if they do DREAm perhaps they will follow with some other bills that help others... we all know that Immigration isn't popular with law makers nor a priority. Some times you have to take what you can get even if it does not help you directly, but hope that if you support that measure or the interest groups that are more align with legal immigration can in turn ask for support for their own measures, it's all about making a deal in DC. that's all I am saying...
  17. My 2 cents's Avatar
@Jim, I agree visa recapture will benefit both EB & FB categories. But as everyone is aware these law makers lack common sense they if they had would be pushing for sensible non-controversial solutions like visa recapture, not counting dependents on EB petitions etc.
  18. Realistic's Avatar
"If DREAM is passed, legals will pose as illegals. And that is a SHAME for the whole country."

Based on current estimates, an EB3 India kid who apply now (as dependent) will get GC in 35 years. With DREAM, you can get GC in less than 5 or 6 years based on your kid's age.

    Unreal.
  19. Legal and no longer waiting's Avatar
Well, there we go, nobody wants CIR and nobody wants piecemeal, too.

I guess, nobody will get anything.
  20. F's Avatar
They should have a provision in Dream act that prevents these kids from sponsering their parents.
