DHS TO DEVELOP SINGLE, SEARCHABLE IMMIGRATION DATABASE

Rate this Entry

Nextgov.com reports:

The Homeland Security Department plans to establish a database of immigration data that will identify fraud in applications for benefits, and provide information to intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

DHS will create a mirror copy of multiple databases the Citizenship and Immigration Services uses to award federal benefits to immigrants and nonimmigrants and develop a single user interface employees use to access the stored information, according to a notice the department published in theFederal Register on Wednesday.

The Citizenship and Immigration Data Repository System of Records, which will include real-time updates and a search engine, will allow officials to vet applications for fraud and national security concerns, detect misuse of immigration information by agency employees for personal gain, and respond to classified requests for information that could assist intelligence and law enforcement investigations. CIDR will sit on the department's classified network.

This is good news from a security perspective and pro-immigration advocates should be pleased. The faster fraud can be identified and the more effective DHS is at catching it, the easier it is to defend having a generous and open immigration system.

Obama thinks Emanuel would be terrific as Chicago's next Mayor. I agree too b'cos I want him out of the WH. He is the roadblock when it comes to CIR. I think Obama has had enough with him & sends him back to Chicago.

If Obama wants CIR Emanuel cannot block it. Emanuel was against HCR as well but went along with it. If you remember it was president who said that congress does not have appetite for CIR. He also made remarks against nurse immigration right after he took presidency. He believes in training at home which is not enough to face upcoming nursing shortage epidemic. He wants to maintain status quo.

God Immanuel may be the main reason why we may not have a double dip or more restrictionist policies, Rahm Emanuel is the main reason we are likely to get a double dip and more restrictionist policies...that is unless the GOP takes the House and puts the fear of God Immanuel into Obama and forces him to send Rahm Emanuel packing!

List of senators who are "good guys" in terms of CIR.

There will be at least one bad guy joining the US House of Reps, whether it is for CIR or just plain legal immigration!

With this kind of progress, raicst Kirkorian's case against immigration rings hollow, especially as he is not protesting the education budget cuts around the country...

To stop jobs from going abroad and attract jobs from abroad, it seems to me from this repor that we need more skilled immigration, not less!

Not a single Republican on the "good guys", a pity. In what direction this country is headed to???

@Adi, Emanuel was the one who commented immigration is the "third rail of politics", with this guy around nothing's happening on the immigration front. I agree with you that Obama is not keen on pushing the matter. But I do feel if Emanuel is out it would be different environment at the WH.
