ONE FIFTH OF ONE PERCENT

Rate this Entry

ABC News has an interesting piece that discusses the birth tourism controversy and quotes a statistic that actually comes from Lindsey Graham's office. According to the National Center of Health Statistics, just 7,760 mothers report that they live outside the US of more than 4,000,000 births each year. Keep in mind that some of these mothers are actually US citizens who reside abroad but want to have their children in the US. So we're really talking about less than .2% of all births as being this huge problem that suddenly justifies overturning the 14th Amendment.

As Feingold and Keyes said GOP and racist white people among them should drop dead! This repeal of 14th amendment is related to the fact that whites will be a minority in this country by 2050. I actually blame the African American women who keep complaining that they cannot find husbands. If they establish a mail order husband program with Africa, and marry African men in large numbers, whites would cease to be a minority a lot sooner...by 2025.

This is not overturning the 14th Amendment. This is overturning one clause of the 14th Amendment.

All the same...down the slippery slope!

The issue is more the hundreds of thousands of annual births to illegal alien mothers. Do you want to control who becomes a U.S. citizen or just let it be determined by whatever foreign nationals show up in your country, friendly or unfriendly? In addition to the control and security arguments, the anti-birthright citizenship case is also based on the availability of benefits to the family if the minor is a legal resident. The sponsorship of family members at age 21 can be ended by amending the INA but ending birthright citizenship would also accomplish that.

Open border advocates are understandably defensive about ending birthright citizenship not just because it would result in a lower citizen population but it harms their anti-enforcement agenda by taking away their "dividing families" rhetoric against deportation. Theoretically, without birthright citizenship the support for deportation would go up. The case for amnesty to equalize the status of mixed status families instantly disappears.

There are elements in the GOP such as Jim Sessions and Jim DeMint who will like to bring back Jim Crow if they can help it!

Racist whites in South Africa implemented apartheid when they were becoming a minority. Dont underestimate the ability of racist whites in this country to try and do the same, particularly in the south!

Jack, wake up. You cannot control all immigration - only the legal part of it. Well, unless you want to turn the US into the North Korea. Thus, if you want to get any control, you need to have an open immigrantion policy.

Repealing the 14th ammendment will just produce more illegal immigrants, the type that were born and raised in the US. The same is with any other "tough" measure - it only produces MORE illegal immigration. I guess, that's the goal for people like you.

Depends on what pro-life stance anti-birth right folks take. If they push for pro-life stance in places such as Mexico (as Graham and others in the GOP do), they have to live with the consequences.

"The sponsorship of family members at age 21 can be ended by amending the INA but ending birthright citizenship would also accomplish that."

As I said, the goal of the antis is to reduce legal immigration.
