IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: IGNACIA MOYA - MATRIARCH

Rate this Entry

OK, the hiatus of Immigrant of the Day is officially over. Send me your suggestions and I look forward to highlighting the accomplishments of immigrants contributing to America in many ways.

Ingacia+Moya
Congrats to Mexican-born Ignacia Moya who at 106 years old has become a naturalized American. She immigrated to the US nearly 40 years ago already in her 70s. Despite her blindness and deafness, Ms. Moya has persevered in seeking citizenship and is realizing her dream after nearly a quarter century of waiting.

All of Ms. Moya's children, grandchildren and great-children are in the US including her great-grandson George Bojorquez, a US Marine. Ms. Moya is the third oldest person ever to naturalize. The oldest, incidentally, was a Turkish native who was sworn in at the age of 117.

This should serve as a warning to all highly qualified foreign engineers and scientists who are waiting in the EB queues. You might as well give up unless you want to wait until you are 100 years old. Maybe then they'll give you the precious privilege of citizenship in a third-world country, which the US will undoubtedly be at that time.

"In 1986, she studied for the citizenship exam but didn't understand English well enough to pass it.

Learning English proved too difficult as she lost her sight and hearing, but Rep. Luis Guti?rrez assisted her with getting a medical waiver, and last Friday she completed a final interview with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services."

This is precisely the reason we shouldn't have rigid language/civic lesson requirements. This poor woman has been prevented from becoming a citizen since 1986.

The folks who advocate that English be designated as the National/Official language of the USA are wrong and need to be reminded that both English and Spanish are "alien" European languages. Why is it necessary to mandate the use of one over the other? If folks feel they need to learn English to function in the USA then they will learn it without it being mandated. The last I checked there wasn't a language called American. (It seems that chauvinists have the same M.O. everywhere, in India there isn't a language called Indian but the Hindi chauvinists are always trying to displace English, an "alien" language that has served India well).

The Nativists who accuse Indians immigrants of having an un-undertandable "thick" accent need to remember that they themselves speak English with a "nasal" accent. The only folks that don't have an "accent" are those who speak RP English. As nativists are an ignorant lot a link is provided below for their edification:
