REID CONSIDERING DREAM ACT VOTE BEFORE ELECTION

Rate this Entry

Others have suggested this, but we're now hearing that Majority Leader Reid is looking at trying to get a DREAM Act vote before the November election. According to Roll Call (subscription required):

In an interview with La Opinion, the Nevada Democrat said he is largely leaving it up to reform advocates to tell him when a comprehensive bill is no longer viable and that the Senate should instead move to the narrower DREAM Act.

After backers of a comprehensive bill say "that they feel we cannot get [comprehensive immigration reform] done this year -- and the reason why we cannot do it, it's because we don't have a single Republican -- then I would like to figure out when can we do the DREAM Act. I would like to do it before the elections," Reid told La Opinion.

I'm ready to tell Reid today that CIR is not viable at this point and that we should look at smaller measures - DREAM, legal immigration reform, AgJobs, etc. - in the near term. CIR will eventually be necessary, but we're farther away from the necessary votes than we've been in some time.

Well, can he round up enough Dems to vote for it? Secondly, the Cans would most likely filibuster this. So this DREAM can't be a reality at this time.

Let this be a lesson to every anti, bigot and racist...if you dont let immigrants in, you may have to immigrate out...to a developing country...

Does anyone cares about legal immigration? Will that be considered at all? Like Nursing bill, Visa recapture? Yes? No?

    Nursing bill. Yes.
    Visa Recapture. Yes.
    245i. No.
    AgJobs. Yes.*
    DREAM. Yes.

    * I am personally opposed to AgJobs and believe all illegals should be treated equally. It is un-American to tell an illegal that if you go work on a farm (probably at the minimum wage) you will get a GC otherwise you must remain in the shadows. Furthermore, farmers already receive numerous subsidies and this is yet another subsidy.

Your best bet is to write to Charlie Rangel, he is likely to support 245i.

Oh, please do tell him !! I know he knows that there are no votes for CIR this year and chances for CIR will likely go down further after the Nov. elections w/c means CIR on Pres. Obama's first term is not likely. He just wants the reform advocates to tell him publicly that they are now willing to do piece-meal legislations and finally admit that CIR is not viable so that he and the Dems are covered in the upcoming Nov. elections.

Let all the necessary piece-meal legislations such as DREAM, Nursing bill and EB-reform or at the very least visa recapture be tackled ASAP so that it can be implemented by the start of the new fiscal year in Oct. 2010.
