REPUBLICAN HOUSE MEMBERS: WE'RE READY TO PASS IMMIGRATION REFORM

Rate this Entry

Conservatives for Comprehensive Immigration Reform (yes, there is such a group and, yes, it makes perfect sense for true, small government conservatives), had a strategy call this week. Here's a key comment from the call:

Congressman Lincoln Diaz Balart stated, "We're ready in
the House...There is a variety of thinking in both parties on this issue.
Republicans have backed off in the Senate. They have not backed off in
the House."

His brother,

Congressman Mario Diaz Balart continued,
"This issue is, how do we get it done? Where we are today. Obama said
that in his first 12 months he would pass immigration reform. We have
30 working days in the 111th Congress. That's when Obama decides [to
give a speech]. What have we seen following the speech? We need to
pressure the White House and the Speaker to allow us to vote on a bill...
There are Republican votes [in the House]. What we need is for the
President to tell the Speaker to get this on the agenda. We could get it
passed in the House... I'm pretty certain."

I hope this is not just lip service. Get it done in the House ASAP and then get it done in the Senate on the lame duck session immediately after the Nov. elections.

    There's hope.

I think this is just a Republican strategy to pressure Democrats to play ball on this issue. Even though the Dems have a majority in the House they do not have enough votes to pass a bill. Why don't one of the Can member from this group try on bipartisanship. That should gather more support on both sides.

This is just electoral politics by the republicans in order to show the dems as Lip service to Latinos. Not far from the true but not true that the republicans are for immigration either.... they know there is no chance to move on this and therefore they are not taking a risk by talking out of their other holes... Pelosi already said that she would move once the Senate moves it does not matter if the house moves if the senate kills it by doing nothing, Electoral politics both parties will do and say anything....

The only thing they're going to pass is gas.

I've had enough of this BS.

Who comprises this group from the House? It is just the Balart-Diaz brothers? If so, that's not really much help to us. They were likely voters to begin with. Also, when they say that they're ready, who exactly is ready? This phantom group of theirs?

Sorry to be pessimistic, but this is more hot air.

That guy Lincon Balart is retiring g he is risking nothing by supporting CIR, the brother was a likely supporter.

Meanwhile, AZ congressman John Shadegg introduced the SKIL ACT to fix the the EB immigration system last July 1.

    http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:H.R.5658:

Since everyone seems to not believe that there can be CIR for this year and therefore the next 1-2 yrs as well can everyone just support piece-meal legislations such as the above and as well as the DREAM ACT and nursing shortage relief??

Passing such piece-meal bills is better than nothing. Not to mention it has the best chances. Hope AILA supports this as well.

The problem is that the effort required to pass piecemeal stuff and CIR is likely the same. All of us have seen how the restrictionists get worked up whenever *any* immigration bill is debated.

But, in some sense Shaddegg is a restrictionist..the problem regarding Shaddegg legislation is liberals such as Bernie "the Braindead" Sanders likes to follow the British Conservative line and restrict skilled migrants.

Firstly it's unfair to tie legals to the illegals. One should rather be sending a stern message by providing the legals GC with priority over the illegals.

The August visa bulletin is out and linked below:

    http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/bulletin/bulletin_5092.html

In the last 4 months (see below) the FB1 category has advanced 17 months, the FB2A 30 months, the FB2B 22 months, the FB3 7 months and the FB4 15 months.

The State Department mentioned a few bulletins ago that FB applicants hadn't been proceeding with their IV applications. I wonder if this is due to the collapse of the US economy (which results from the disastrous policies pursued by America's second smartest President in the 80s) or because of the restrictions on our civil liberties implemented by America's smartest President in the zilches.

The State department had predicted retrogression (which may yet happen) instead of which the rapid movement of the FB categories has continued. Based on this, it appears that market based quotas would work. The analysis below is for ROW/Chindia (I have omited Mexico & the Philippines which are gone cases).

    FB1: April Bulletin - July 8, 2004, May - September 8, 2004 (2 months advance), June - November 8, 2004 (2 months), July - April 1, 2005 (4.75 months), August - August 1, 2005 (4 months). Total advance over last 4 months: 16.75 Months.

    FB2A: April - Sep 1, 2006, May - Dec 1, 2006 (3 months), June - Jan 1, 2008 (13 months), July - July 1, 2008 (6 months), August - March 1, 2009 (8 months). Total advance over last 4 months: 30 months.

    FB2B: 3/1/02 to 7/1/02 (4 months), to 11/15/02 (4.5 months), to 5/1/03 (5.5 months) to 1/1/04 (8 months) . Total advance over last 4 months: 22 months.

    FB3: 5/22/01 to 6/08/01 (0.5 month), to 6/22/01 (0.5 months), to 9/1/01 (2.25 months), to 1/1/02 (4 months). Total advance over last 4 months: 7.25 months.

    FB4: 3/1/00 to 5/15/00 (2.5 months), to 9/1/00 (3.5 months), to 01/01/01 (4 months) to 6/1/01 (5 months). Total advance over last months: 15 months.

Any speculation as to the unusual PD movement?

USC - It could also be a similar thing to 2007 when the State Department was upset that USCIS was wasting so many green card slots by not completing enough cases each fiscal year. The Ombudsman report shows a new figure for unused green card slots that is very high indicating the problem is back. Perhaps State wants to put some pressure on USCIS to do their jobs.

"Give the man credit. In 2007, Mr. Obama figured out how to get the support of Latinos (by speaking in favor of an immigration bill) while keeping the support of labor (by voting for amendments designed to ensure an immigration bill would never pass). In like manner, he now parades as a bipartisan reformer while his actions poison the chances for any bipartisan bill for years to come.

Guess what? It's still working for him."

Greg, Could you post the link for the Ombudsman's report if possible. If this trend continues the FB backlog would almost be minimal.

With Rahm Emanuel by his side do not expect any sincere immigration reform efforts from the WH. I am waiting to see how the lawsuit turns out. If other states come up with laws like AZ did then the WH would be forced to bring reform to the table.
