Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

COLBERT: COME ON AMERICANS, TAKE OUR FARMWORKER JOBS

Rating: 4 votes, 4.00 average.

Leave it to comedian Stephen Colbert to send home the point that comprehensive immigration reform - particularly plans to legalize millions of farm workers - will not result in Americans losing jobs. From the AP:

In a tongue-in-cheek call for immigration reform, farm workers are teaming up with comedian Stephen Colbert to challenge unemployed Americans: Come on, take our jobs.

Farm workers are tired of being blamed by politicians and anti-immigrant activists for taking work that should go to Americans and dragging down the economy, said Arturo Rodriguez, the president of the United Farm Workers of America.

So the group is encouraging the unemployed -- and any Washington pundits or anti-immigrant activists who want to join them -- to apply for the some of thousands of agricultural jobs being posted with state agencies as harvest season begins.

All applicants need to do is fill out an online form under the banner "I want to be a farm worker" at http://www.takeourjobs.org, and experienced field hands will train them and connect them to farms.

According to the Labor Department, three out of four farm workers were born abroad, and more than half are illegal immigrants.

The question is not whether the American worker will do the job, but why is the US farmer using illegal labor? Give the American worker $30/hour with good health benefits and you will find plenty of Americans who will do the work. If the US farmer does that, then the Mexican farmer can better compete with his produce and keep the workers there.

NO! If we remove all farm subsidies, Mexican illegals will return home, because their farms will become more profitable. Your ideas pretty counter-intuitive. Who is going to pay for the higher prices? You? FAIR? CIS? racists such as Mark Kirkorian? Steve Camarotta? Jan Brewer? Russell Pearce, Dan Stein? Califronians for Population Stabilization? Pat Buchanan? GOP congress? They will come to me the tax payer for money at a time of higher deficits and I am not willing to pay more for produce, which is as expensive as it is. Giving the worker $30/hour with good health insurance will only double the price of produce and make it unaffordable for poor families or increase subsidies..and I for one will not support this at a time of recession!

$30 an hour?? Maybe you want the same benefits as the autoworkers as well and we all know how the US autoindustry went. That's stiff and just delusional. Some professionals that actually needs degrees and even 4 yr degrees don't even start at $30/hour.

If that happens more farm owners will just go to Mexico (it's actually happening already) where they can get affordable labor since he knows that American consumers do not want to pay for high food prices.

Read somewhere: California either imports labor to pick strawberries or it imports strawberries. You choose.

"California either imports labor to pick strawberries or it imports strawberries"

And who on their right mind would give $30 an hour plus benefits to just pick strawberry??

That American worker that allegedly worked in family farm should start his own farm as well. Let's see if he can keep his farm afloat while still giving his farmers $30 an hour plus benefits.

I've been reading comments from yahoo as well whenever there are immigration-related topics. Majority of all anti comments are simply borne from ignorance and has no basis at all nor even in touch with reality.

When you confront them with data proving them wrong they just dismiss it. May favorite excuses has always been "it's not what they see and feel". Maybe because their prejudices, discrimination and racism (some) blocks their logic and common sense.

My suggestion to the antis such as FAIR and CIS:

    1. Put your money where your mouth is! If you feel that we should train more Americans, protest the education budget cuts. Not come three years afterwards and claim "we should and should have" trained more Americans!

    2. If you think we need to pay $30/hour plus benefits to attact Americans, please suggest a way as to how we are going to pay the higher price for food...are you willing to pay out of your pocket and subsidize poor people? Or are you expecting me, a taxpayer, to pay for it? This baloney of doubling salaries to attract Americans plainly does not wash. Doubling nurses salary means insurance premium goes up and put our seniors to pasture! Doubling farm salary means doubling food prices, higher inflation, higher interest rates and another recession!

Jim, it's the concept of truthiness - the truth is what I want it to be, and damn the facts. These people can't be convinced. Ever. That's just not how their brain functions (I would not call it "thinking"). You have to wonder with only 20-25% of population being tea party crazy or virulently anti immigrant, why there are so many of them commenting? My suspicion - because nobody wants to hire them. Just like students who are excellent in one academic subject are usually pretty good in others, people who have aweful judgement in one area usually have pretty bad judgement in other areas. Thus, the abundunce of free time during day hours.

Thanks God that some people are noticing that some anti-immigrants are just ignorants. Please anti-immigrants come to Georgia there are a lot of vacants in poultry plants. I hope you enjoy doing that kind of duty jobs. Also I hope you earn $30 dollars an hour. I am pretty sure a lot of well educated people( from Universities, Colleges and technical schools)would be very excited to get this kind of jobs. Finally, do not forget that there are more positions as a farmworkers in Florida and California. I hope you have the nuts to work hard doing the jobs that "illegal workers" do for little money. Enjoy it.

You may get your wish. Nathan Deal or Karen Handel still have the chance to win the primary. Karen Handel want the whole of Georgia looking like her..not racially, but as a college dropout..actually no one has seen her school leaving certificate either. Guess ignoramoses will follow an ignoramous.

May be Georgia will pass a minimum wage act forcing farmers to pay $30/hour in return for some farm subsidies. With the way the things are going Uni grads may either have to go abroad to work, in places like Singapore and Hong Kong or even China or work on the farms. I am pretty sure there are folks in Georgia who have never left their state plus SC...ran into them in Fanine, Rabun, Forsythe, Hall and Calhoun counties and all of these characters were white whose English is barely audible and yes they will ask others to speak English while they themselves dont...these folks may have no choice but to work on the farms or be unemployed!

"Finally, do not forget that there are more positions as a farmworkers in Florida and California. I hope you have the nuts to work hard doing the jobs that "illegal workers" do for little money. Enjoy it."

Send the Georgia, Arizona and Alabama boys and girls over there...I mean serious white boys and girls.
