Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Rate this Entry

Not a lot new, but an inspiring speech. Will it change the politics? I'm skeptical, particularly since the President didn't mention timetables or explain any Administrative fixes to show a seriousness about fixing immigration (other than enforcement). The only thing he said has improved is the length of background checks.

In fact, he said that we should not expect any Administration steps to deal with legalization before Congress acts. It seems obvious this was aimed at the Republicans who are upset about such rumors of using parole power or other authority.

The speech was clearly aimed at Hispanic voters who could devastate Democrats' chances of retaining control of both Houses of Congress if they stay home in November. But Hispanic citizens are upset that the White House is all action on enforcement and all talk on helping immigrants legalize. I don't see how this has changed as a result of this speech.

Obama should own up or hold top brass accountable for the systemic failure at the USCIS, a thorough shakedown is required. He was trying to court the Latino voters for the mid terms. If that was the case the timing is way off. If he thinks Congress is going to work on some reform after this speech he is misguided.

i did not even pay attention at the speech or have any hope.

The Latino voters will be the biggest loosers if they stay home. Unfortunately, the Latino voters only react when their interests are threatened as in Arizona. Some of the races became a lot closer after the passage of the Arizona law although not in AZ itself. In the end, it is not Obama's loss. Whatever birthers may beleive or say, he gets to stay in this country and no one is going to stop him and ask him for papers. By staying home, it is the Hispanics who stand to loose!

Obama is basically between the devil and the deep sea, if he brings on CIR2010 and it fails ( which it will for sure, becoz the reps wont give him even one vote) then he'll be blamed for its failure. If he waits to build more consensus and win more seats/votes to pass it himself (like obamacare), he'll be blamed for the failure in approach, and wont get the votes to pass it. Quite a paradox.

This article clearly distinguishes between the true evangelicals and the truly white skin worshipping pagans masquerading as evangelicals hiding behind legality...

    Hi Greg,

Did you hear about the four Filipina staffers that were fired from Baltimore City Hospital. The hospital has an English-only policy in the Emergency room but they were speaking Tagalog during lunch break - one of them was not even a nurse (the group that the policy applies to).

Here is the link to the news item --->

Do the white southerners speak English? Not one of them made it to Top 100 in the recent Spelling Bee contest!

Answer: Nothing! No hint was given whether they plan to start something soon. It is just talk to keep the Latino vote bank interested. Nothing was mentioned, not even Republican names who were contacted or are going to be contacted or invited to discuss immigration, CIR or piecemeal. Nothing!!
    It is sad.

Seems to be lip service, Latino voters will be their own worst enemies if they stay home and let republicans regain control or too much control.... But I can understand hispanics they are caught between the dems paying lip service and doing nothing or letting the radicals that want them all out take over.... they have to choose the lesser evil. Not sure if that is motivating to show up at the polls in November... they get nothing either way!!! Specially since Obama is saying the border is more secure today but we still have no CIR bill that I can get support for... why should latinos vote for the Dems then, after their super majorities did nothing for CIR. Why should a less majority or divided congress do more than the alternative....

    @Nitin

Hope they win their case. It sure like it though base from the data gathered about it so far and specially since there was a similar case before. That case won, by the way.

I wonder if a white man or woman casually says to one of his or her co-workers Konnichiwa (Japanese for good afternoon) or Bon Jour or said Bon Voyage after they casually tell stories of going on vacation in Paris while on lunch break. Do you think they will be fired as well?? I don't think so.

That story was just senseless. As non-sense as the California Board of Nursing now requiring a foreign nurse applying to them to provide them a US SSN or don't bother to apply at all.
Utter, senseless. I hope someone on the know or the upper ups makes a complaint about that too. That's discrimination as well.

I had been hoping for something insightful and new - a "third way" approach of some sort, so I'm disappointed in that regard. For Obama to reiterate George W. Bush's position (which is what this is) from the pulpit of the presidency has value, and I very much appreciated the quoting from Emma Lazarus at the end (pro-migrants don't trot that out often enough), but repeating W's position is not enough to get legislation through. We know that by experience.

English speaking is very important in hospitals and other places for that matter. If they allow any foreign language then break room conversations can easily turn into ER conversations. I have seem people discussing in other languages and I find it very offensive. It is basic courtesy (and extremely important) to speak in common language at your workplace.

Still firing is taking it to the extreme. Warning, fines etc could have done the job. I don't see racism here. They have a policy in hospital (and reasonable one) and everybody needs to follow it.

What did they gain by helping democrats in last two elections? Remember it was Bush (republican) who was action rather than all talk like Obama.

I really think this guy lacks leadership. He can't bring all democrats together let alone republicans. I mean seriously, with super majority in congress and white house, they have guts to blame republicans!!! And people are actually buying it.

Hi N - Did not see this story, but sounds like there may be a lawsuit. I'm not an employment lawyer so really am not an expert, but I'd be interested in hearing from them on this case.

They did not get racist laws such as those in Arizona at the Federal level. If you let the likes of Rand Paul, Sharon Angle or JD Hayworth take control, they may even implement apartheid!

Try to re-read the article. There were no prior warnings at all and they can't produce proper documentation of the alleged incident. I Have friends who works as nurses in the US and they said making up a negative write-up on a good employee is quite common on their workplace and as well as covering-up actual bad nurses (steals drugs esp. pain relievers and narcotics, neglects patients, abuses patients esp. elderly, etc...)

Funny thing is bad acts of nurses needs to be proven or have to be caught on the act like getting it on CCTV while nurses who receives made-up allegations gets reprimanded by their managers eventhough it's hearsay.

I doubt that they are alleging racism either. They are probably suing base on job discrimination and undue process.

Came across this one. US-educated Ukranian woman hired by JP Morgan in Mumbai. Wonder if the TARP visa rule had a role to play in this.

I have been saying this since last February. The problem is Charles "Assley" Grassley and Bernie "Brain-dead" Sanders are as dumb as a door knob. Grassley is hell bent on destroying this country. He is trying to make Americans abroad pay taxes for salary made less than $82,000. At least now they recruit Americans abroad. In the future they wont.

Respondent Bhushan has a valid question:

"Can I challenge the same in US/EU court, Why am denied the work permit there if am ready to work on less than USD 40,000?"

Surveys in the UK, Australia and Singapore indicate that most of their citizens want it to be a one way street. 70% of Brits working abroad or who want to work abroad dont want foreigners working in their country. The results are similar for other countries mentioned here. Folks, this has to be a two way street. Otherwise I have an alternate suggestion. Kick all the Brits out of foreign countries and let them kick all foreigners out of Britain. Ditoo for Singapore and Australia. However, one should mention that the Government of Singapore does what is best for the country unlike the Governments of UK and Australia which pander to public opinion.
