GUTIERREZ: NOT ENOUGH DEMS TO PASS REFORM THIS YEAR

Rate this Entry
Not surprising, but surprising that Luis would admit it. And if this is the case (and I think it is), then the question is whether we wait until 2011 or later to push again or finally decide it's time to look at other strategies like piecemeal reform (pass DREAM, AgJobs, legal immigration reform now and deal with legalization later) or look at administrative actions like TPS or parole and a moratorium on deportations for people who would otherwise meet the requirements of a proposed legalization program.

Pass the Dream Act! Pass it now.

If he thinks it's not gonna pass this year because there is not enough Dems then certainly it won't pass next year and the year after as some Dems won't be back.

Time for piece-meal legislations and the CIR-only zealots should have a dose of reality.

DREAM Act, AgJobs, Visa recapture/legal immigration reform,Nurse bill are needed ASAP.

TPS/Parole and moratorium on deportations will do as well.

No reason why all those can't be done.

Dems are going to loose some major seats in the Nov elections, this was the closest they would have ever gotten to pass CIR with 59 Dems, it will never happen, CIR will be an illusion forever.

Piecemeal might happen but i doubt it, Agjobs and Dreamact might have a shot in the dark, but nothing more

The time has come for all potential future immigrants to realize that they are not welcome here any more. I am talking about legal immigrants of course. They can choose to wait 10-15 yr at the same job hoping to get a Green card, or they can choose to leave and look at other places where they are welcome.

Just make sure you say that to your fellow Americans as well. Don't bother to go to other countries and stay in your home country.

Don't bother to do business outside the US as well and don't import goods from China. Buy only American brands as well and stop buying foreign brands. Keep everything inside the US.

They need to pass something if they want to keep the hispanic vote....

I do not see any immigration legislation (CIR or piecemeal) under Obama's presidency. Legals seem to have a better chance under a Republican president (eg. Schedule A & even amnesty if I'm not wrong).

I feel sad for the Latinos who voted for Obama believing that he will bring some change and make their lives better. Legal or illegal, they are humans whose lives and sufferings matter. But who cares..

You may get your wish in November... and 2012, we'll see if true, although I must say after 8 years of republican control both documented and undocumented immigrants have little to show for... My sense is that neither party really cares what happens to immigrants!!!

AV, Do not forget Schedule A came during Bush's tenure also the VB fiasco in Aug 2007. I feel the legals have a better chance with the Cans. The Dems want the Latino vote but do not have the spine for even introducing an immigration bill in the Senate or debate the one already in the House even with a majority in the Senate & House.

This is best possible strategy for near future. CIR is not happening and it is best to recognize it. If CIR cannot pass with democratic control of congress and white house, its not happening when republicans gain ground. It is silly to expect it to pass in 2011 when more tea party candidates show up in congress. Just take what you can get for this time. Dream act, AgJobs, Legal immigration, Nursing relief, moratorium on deportations can give lot of relief to lot of people. Waiting for impossible CIR is painful for lot of people.

20 more states are waiting the results of anticipated lawsuit against Arizona. If Arizona wins that lawsuit, you can guarantee that lot of states will adopt the same path.

Could not have said it better, Adi. We are definitely on the same wavelength. Just hope the CIR-only zealots are back on Earth and I don't want to hear anymore there are no chance for piece-meal legislations w/o an amnesty-powered CIR. Even Gutierrez knows it's not happening.

Seems to be a high-level set of meetings. Not sure though if something really substantial results from it. To me, only thing for sure is the filling of the suit against the AZ law. Everything else are iffy but hoping for the best.

They need to realize that by delaying these proposals and waiting for the impossible CIR, they are playing with people's lives. There are so many patients die due to extra burden on nurses. There are so many medication errors, less care, skin breakdowns, infections, falls and breaking bones, patients with mental disorders let go early, etc. All these are American citizens who face unnecessary tragedies everyday, which can be reduced by having sufficient nurses on staff. These are actual lives at stake, just because of politics. Every day that goes by without legislation, more people die.

Genuine kids who want to go to college, are waiting and cannot take advantage of opportunities. Those who do go to college cannot work legally and are not able to take advantage of their education. These kids are wasting their lives and are in desperate need of help. Every month that goes by without legislation, they are coming closer to wasting away their talent and becoming a burden on society in future.

These two bills I believe are extremely urgent to be passed along with AgJobs and recapture of visa.

Tell that to Tunnel Rat. But seriously, he should apply there. Baidu may just be the tip of the iceberg in China.

Who is tunnel rat? You mean Jack?

And sit back and watch as the Brits damage their economy and go into a double dip recession as caps on skilled migrants result in jobs moving to other countries!
