FREEMONT, NEBRASKA VOTERS PASS SANCTIONS LAW

Rate this Entry
Voters in meatpacking town Freemont, Nebraska have passed
a referendum that bars the hiring of illegally present immigrants and
also bars renting property to them. The referendum passed with 57% of
the vote. Freemont joins Farmington, Texas and Hazleton, Pennsylvania in
passing similar laws and, like those communities, is likely to have to
defend the measure in court. Ordinance 5165 reads as follows:
"Shall the City of Fremont, Nebraska, enact proposed Ordinance
No. 5165, amending the Fremont Municipal Code to prohibit the harboring
of illegal aliens or hiring of unauthorized aliens, providing
definitions, making provision for occupancy licenses, providing
judicial process, repealing conflicting provisions, and establishing an
effective date for this ordinance?"

With the housing market likely to face a double dip I am sure that the landlords and apartment complex companies are thrilled with these people and their ordinances... Not only will foreclosures continue but rent prices will collapse on them due to supply and demand, in addition maintenance crews, painters, roofers and landscapers will likely have less work, this just seems like a real winner for the economy, where did we find such smart bunch!!! I am sure that the politicians that pushed for this ordinance will mention all of this in their re-election bids...

People want to shoot themseves in the foot. I say, let them. When the factory will not have enough workers and closes, who do you think will lose thier jobs, too (accountants, drivers, managers)?

@Legal and no longer waiting: I would agree with you but for the pain of people who bear it in immediate future. The thing you are talking of is a long term consequence and by then they will find someone else to blame.

I don't think it is of long term consequence. Auto industry dying in Detroit (an all around it) is of long term consequence, but Fremont, NE acting out is not. So, there will be another ghost town in American ex-urbia, that's no big deal. Some other town will be happy to pick up the slack - and a few thousand hard working Hispanics. People who voted the measure in will lose 25% of their home's value, cut the losses, and move somewhere else.

Immigration reform has almost become a joke now a days. There are some who believe that it is needed while there are some who believe it is all BS, and reform = amnesty. I agree that these people do not understand the dictionary meaning of the word "Comprehensive". So in reality these sentiments of an amnesty are preventing any sort of reform to be even initiated.

What happens now or after the elections? Here is my humble prediction.
    1. Democrats will still have control but will lose some seats because of lesser Hispanic votes.
    2. Dems won't try any sort of immigration reform before the elections, because they know the "amnesty" sentiment thing will drive away loyal voters, which will be a bigger setback than losing some Latino votes.
    3. Next year, they still won't do CIR only piecemeal legislation, because the truth is that they really don't care of the people living in the shadows. It is all talk. If they really cared, they would have kept the politics aside and introduced the CIR bill in the senate and at least try to pass it, even if they looked at failure. Ask the people who are really suffering, and tell them the usual BS. this yr we have , then climate change, then some oil-spill thing, now soccer matches, oh then elections, next yr there will be a Golf tournament, the US open..the list keeps growing..
so all of us should stop wasting time and use it to good use, this includes me as well. But again hope floats..

    Thanks,

Housing sales and prices are plunging the fastest in Arizona..good for them. I will oppose anymore bailout of the housing industry. They want to sell homes...give the rich Chinese Green Cards and let them buy the houses and move into the neighborhood..now that Yuan is appreciating American property should be cheaper.

And why do you think rich chinese would want to relocate to US? Days are gone when US offered something unique. They have their own dreams in their countries. Capital returns are greater in India/China. Why would they want to come here? People need to come out of their cocoon to realize that talented and/or rich people in India and China do not come to US for immigration anymore. Check out campus hiring at IIT/IIM for last 7-8 yrs. Its purely domestic. Nobody form people I know wants to come here for long term. Only preference is for short term stints. Economic factors are already against permanent immigration to US/western Europe. US dollar is headed in very wrong direction. US needs to do more for attracting best talent. Start up culture has picked up in China and India. Just look at Baidu vs Google. US should atleast make high skill immigration a no-brainer, starting yesterday.

They certainly have the $$$ but are not stupid. Why would wealthy from China buy properties here?

Not exactly! Look for homeless white Arizonans to be up in arms both figuratively and literally and Rush Limbaugh and JD Hayworth wanting to run the Chinese out of town! Many Singaporeans are buying property in the UK and the UK is pretty anti-Asian and anti-Chinese, even some of the Brits who are working in Singapore, and UK is going to hell in a handbasket and is tightening migration laws exactly when they need foreigners to buy surplus homes...however, they dont seem to be as virulent as folks in places such as Arizona

lc, will you go work at a meatpacking plant? Will anyone you know go work at a meatpacking plant? How many months or years of unemployment will you endure before you throw in the towel and go work at a meatpacking plant? There is your answer.
