CIR-LITE DEAL IN THE WORKS?

Rate this Entry

Keep an eye on the military appropriations bill Congress is working on for a potential immigration piece. The AP reports that Republicans want some serious money and personnel commitments for the southern border. And my own sources are telling me that some Democrats are looking at trying to get the DREAM Act in that same piece of legislation. Remember, DREAM allows for some who join the military to pursue permanent residency so it would be a germane part of the bill.

A down payment on comprehensive immigration reform? Or the end of that effort and the return to piecemeal legislating? And if so, is that bad? What do you think?

Dealing with DREAM ACT within this appropriation sounds good, but I think they should consider fixing ALL LEGAL issues at once, and after CLIMATE BILL, should move on to UNDOCUMENTED.

I think it is down payment for CIR, but yet very cautiously optimistic that anything will get included.

Greg, any chance for nursing relief being added to it?

A half loaf of bread is better than no bread at all.... specially on immigration. They way their are doing this seems perfectly in sync with a Washington style problem solving skills. You know it's a band aid and won't stop the bleeding but that will allow them to claim political victory on both sides of the aisle and that is what counts for them....

If they are pushing for Piecemeal legislation, Dems need to look at the other bills in the line too for legal immigration, such as the Nurse relief bill and HR 2536 bill for shortage of Nurses and PT's. It will be unfair to people waiting for these bills to pass if only the DREAM act passes. Because all we have been hearing since last year that Congress wants to pass all immigration limited bill together and not one by one. They need to look at bills that fix the legal side of it first, and then only work on the illegal immigration piece, because if they don't fix the legal piece first, then then the illegal piece will get stuck anyways.

I don't disagree with you but, life is not fair and immigration politics either, so you have to adapt to the realities of these things when you analyze the situation....

245i extension is one of the solution in immigration reform.
Why? Because it filters out the majority of skilled workers who has pending change of status but has contributed to the US economy. Why it is not amnesty? Simply because they will be paying fines and have been contributing in the US economy using their skills and know-hows. Their only mistake is that they have extended their stay because the US has lengthy time of processing papers and fixing the broken immigration.

Dems will take issues in this order: finance bill, energy bill, BP issue, DADT bill, Social security issue, Iran issue, NK issue, all other countries issues,..,..,... and immigration.

Look, the immigration is still in the list.

Doing piece-meal is better than none. We need to be realistic. The DREAM Act, Emergency Nursing Relief act and visa recapture of unused visas are all needed ASAP and cannot wait for a comprehensive reform to be tackled in 2012 of w/c there is also no guarantee it can be passed as well.

Doing piece-meal is not bad at all.
