IMMIGRATION WORRIES HAUNT MILITARY FAMILIES

Rate this Entry

Julia Preston of the New York Times reports on a common problem that really should be a source of shame for our country - active duty soldiers who not only have to deal with the dangers of serving in a war zone, but also have to deal with the tremendous psychological strain of dealing with family members facing deportation.

Lt. Kenneth Tenebro enlisted in the armed forces after the Sept. 11
terrorist attacks, signing up even before he became an American
citizen.

Lieutenant Tenebro during his tour of duty in Iraq in 2008.

He served one tour of duty in Iraq, dodging roadside bombs, and he
would like to do another. But throughout that first mission, he
harbored a fear he did not share with anyone in the military.
Lieutenant Tenebro worried that his wife, Wilma, back home in New York
with their infant daughter, would be deported.

Wilma, who like her husband was born in the Philippines, is an illegal immigrant.

DHS officials say many thousands of soldiers in the military are in this situation. And the biggest problem apparently is the 1996 Immigration Act which imposes three and ten year bars on immigrating for most even when someone has immediate relatives in the US.

Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren has drafted legislation to help military family members overcome reentry bars so they can avoid the reentry bars. This is one of the many issues that will be dealt with if we get immigration reform. If we don't get a reform bill, this needs to be dealt with this year anyway.

Back in 2007 Bennett had made positive noises on CIR

Now that the Tea party wing of the Can party has decided to deny Bennett the Can nomination, this is someone Reid could try to make a deal with on CIR. Perhaps, he could offer to strip the national ID provision!!

Reid should try to rally all the losers (Dems & Cans) including himself following the midterm elections in November/December to pass CIR in the lame duck session. This would show to the Hispanics that the Dems at least tried unlike Bush & his administration.

Why is a citizen's or resident's wife an illegal alien? Did she enter the country illegally and then get married or is it the circus of waiting lists..where it takes six to eight years to come to the US after gettting married?

George- Most likely illegal entries or or overstaying a visa waiver since either could make someone ineligible to adjust in the US.

    Thanks Greg.
