Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

Is real target of arizona law hispanic us citizens?

Rate this Entry
Left-wing reporter Greg Palast argues that the new Arizona law has nothing to do with stopping illegal immigration and everything to do with targeting the Hispanic US citizens in the state - nearly 30% of Arizonans - who vote overwhelmingly Democrat. Palast lays out the case that the state's GOP has been engaged in a long war on these citizens that involves uppressing their votes and driving them from the state.

Whats up with Graham? Earlier he was complaining about white house not focussing enough on immigration and now he is complaining about focusing too much on the legislation.

I think Republicans started a fire that they cannot put out for few more generations with latinos. Why any latino should vote for GOP in AZ after this bill.

I think Dems should go ahead and try to bring the CIR bill to US senate and expose Republicans for what they are, Even if it means losing some seats in the short term.

No Hispanic will vote for them period and I hope other non-whites should join them as well. If they get a few whites that will be a bonus.

I don't see anyway that the Dems cannot bring CIR to the floor. Reid is also being generous in giving Graham 3 weeks. With Graham now saying CIR cannot be tackled until 2012, there's no point waiting for 3 weeks. It's not going to happen. They should just introduce it ASAP and do it alone.
Karl Rove must be face-palming to himself now. He warned Repubs to not go against immigration and doing so will risk them being the minority party for a long time.

Nevada has already hinted that they are 1 of the 4 States that is said to be in talks with those who crafted the AZ bill. The other 3 mystery States maybe hinting in the coming days as well. If there is no CIR, this will just spread to more States.

There are still 28% of Hispanic voters who will voter for Brewer. Perhaps these look white? Perhaps they are deluded or on drugs, thinking they are white and wont wake up from their stupor until Arapaio and his boys arrest them?

The Arizona law specifically provides for the following:

    (a) Permits *ANY* law enforcement official to make a WARRANTLESS arrest if he has probable cause that the person is an illegal.

    (b) It prohibits the transportation of illegals in ANY means of transportation. Operator of vehicle is subject to have his vehicle seized and a fine of $1000. No exemptions for ambulances or airplanes.

    (c) Gives trespassing a whole new meaning. You can be found guilty of trespassing on your own property if you do not have legal status in the USA.

A rogue cop (read Sherrif Joe) could do any (and more) of the following:

(1)Walk into a Chinese or Mexican or Indian restaurant and ask Chinese/Mexican/Indian diners for their ID, those failing to provide it could be arrested on the spot.

    (2) Ambulance drivers could have their vehicles seized if they transported patients who later (the bill does provide for an exemption from arrest at the time EMT is being rendered) turned out to be illegal. Airlines (that would be you, US Airways), Buses, Railways are also subject to this provision.

    (3) If an illegal uses a credit card to make a travel purchase the bank could be held liable under the "procurement of transportation" provision.

    Link to bill is below:

Senator Graham believes that Arizona law is unconstitutional but still believes we should wait for CIR till 2012:

It seems the Republican party is getting divided due to this issue. Those who are still sane and those whoa are truly right wingnuts. McCain is juggling between the two. I won't be surprised if he runs independent if he is loosing the primaries (more likely).

Arizona immigration law divides Republicans and conservatives:
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/20100428/ts_ynews/ynews_ts1840

This is what I expected. This is where the Republican party becoming a minority party for years to come begins.

I still think McCain will revert back being pro-immigration and will consider running as an independent as I don't see him winning over JD Hayworth. Ditch Sarah Palin as well.
