PELOSI TELLS REID: IMMIGRATION CAN MOVE AHEAD OF CLIMATE BILL

Rate this Entry

Another sign we're about to get in to a serious debate over immigration reform. From Roll Call:

According to Senate Democratic aides, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) agreed during a Tuesday afternoon meeting that a "moral imperative" exists to move immigration reform in 2010. The decision to press ahead on such a controversial issue now -- in an election year -- comes even though Democrats have had little success attracting GOP support for their initiatives in the 111th Congress.

    I am not surprised.

This what is said from a previous post:

"I really hope something gets done. I think financial reform is going to get fast-tracked a bit as well due to the recent SEC charges to Goldman Sachs. That getting done may free up some time for CIR. Energy Reform may be the one that will go to the back burner."

Fin reg is going to be fast-tracked because of the Goldman Sachs fallout, then after the AZ bill passes that will force the hands of the WH to fast-track CIR. The Energy/Climate bill will be the one that will be going to the back burner.

Fin reg and now CIR is far more impt. for the nation's survivability/sustainability and for it's unity. The risk for America to get divided is so high right now that it may threaten national security down the road (sounds crazy I know but it really isn't much diff. from Pentagon saying obese children will be threatening America's national security in 10-20 years from now).

Talk, talk and more talk. It seems there is common census that CIR will be brought up but highly unlikely to pass. Is this show just to appease Mexicans?

Will hispanics allow piecemeal legislation post CIR failure?

If CIR fails, it would take a few good years before it is taken up again. More likely in the next administration.

Hispanics are not blocking this, the merely are advocating for their constituency. If you do not support their cause why should they support yours???
  5. LFWF's Avatar
Actually they are blocking it. But that should be taken in perspective. They are blocking it only in so far as providing relief before a CIR can be done. They believe that increasing pressure on all sectors will get CIR passed. They are probably correct and it is their interest to do this. The Hispanic caucus has always expressed complete support for EB reform within CIR and that shows up in the Guiterrez bill as well.

The question however remains and is not answered by the shot fired by Another Voice. If CIR fails, will the Hispanic caucus allow EB relief?

"If CIR fails, will the Hispanic caucus allow EB relief?" I am sure a political deal can be worked out with them, for future support to their cause down the road, it would not make any sense to block this just out of spike...

I'm glad for your optimism. I agree btw, but history is not supportive. After all CIR has failed twice and all efforts to provide some EB relief have been summarily blocked.
  8. My 2 cents's Avatar
I agree with LFWF, the CHC has blocked all EB efforts in the past when CIR failed so this time it wii be no different as I do not see CIR passing the Senate.

You can't blame them for using the only leverage they have to help their people. If they give that up what else do they have to help their cause. As unfair as it may seem to the EB folks, they have to find some sort of compromise that helps all people, that is if the want the their support. Life is not fair some times just ask the 12 million undocumented immigrants.

We all agree on the severity of the problem of undocumented , If dems cant deliver now with their biggest majorities in a generation and control of the total government they can never deliver and CHC should realise this and get out of way incase of CIR failure.

I think "moral imperative" is code-speak for:

Let's bring up CIR next month but push the floor vote till after Nov (lame-duck). Kill 2 birds in one: it will energize the CHC constituency before the elections, and when CIR fails during lameduck, we will blame it on the GOP!

Sen. Graham: Move CIR ahead of Climate bill and you compromise Climate bill.

Now, where did I hear something similar he said not long ago. Oh, yeah... pass HCR and you compromise CIR.

For me, him singing the same song is now code for go ahead and do it. We are on the right track.

GOP have no intention to support a climate bill, they always complaint of " Cap and Tax", Graham has no credibility here....

Always politics ahead of real results!!! They can't help themselves, they really like DC.
