SPAT BETWEEN AFL-CIO AND US CHAMBER REGARDING CIR GOES PUBLIC

Rate this Entry

As if CIR isn't on shaky enough ground as is.

The AFL-CIO is pushing a protectionist agenda that will mean no future guest worker program when unemployment rates return to normal. And their plan would put existing non-immigrant visa programs in jeopardy.

The US Chamber is pushing back with a dueling press release.

How about not giving green cards to 12 million undocumented until unemployment level becomes "normal"?

I believe everyone now thinks that employing whoever the employers want in places such as Singapore is the best compromise...which means no immigration reform, loss of tax revenue and draconian cuts in programs including social security and medicare and/or huge tax increases in the future? CIR not likely to happen at least in this congress. May be not till 2013 or 2014. More jobs will go abroad and unemployment will decline to 5.5% at best similar to what happened in the late 1980s.

See, I told ya. It's much easier to sow distrust among the GOP w/ the likes of the TEA party, Limbaugh, Palin, Beck, Hannity, etc.. if the Dems are really on all out attack like what the GOP/Fox is doing.

So, they want to test the waters again in the Nov. elections if they still think that continuing with their anti-immigration stand will not result in the same thing.

    Some people never learn.

Its unfortunate that the AFL_CIO is going to murky the debate by playing to protectionism, specially since they have a lot of pull in the administration. As if CIR could be dealt in absolutes only.... both points made by these organizations are part of the CIR debate and can not be dealt as a separate issue. Its the same thing they are doing in healthcare... one side says you have to cover everyone and the other one says you have to control costs but you can't do both because that is too hard!!!

After health care, I think it will be the Dodd bill. CIR wont even show up!

The Huffington Post article: they failed in 2001. After 9/11 Armey should have put out two stark choices...either unite Christians through CIR (bring more Christians into the country) against Radical Islam or follow the white skin worshipping pagan constituents of Tom Tancredo...this is not morally right, but they did a lot of immoral stuff and one more would have helped the cause of CIR..or at least help us find out whether GOP is a party in which the white skin worshipping pagans are a majority or "true Christians" such as Chris Cannon are a majority. Unfortunately we will never find out, because they lost the opportunity following 9/11/2001! Of course, had they done that, GOP may not be in the minority that they are in today!

I don't think either the US Chamber or the AFL-CIO will be the ones to make immigration reform happen. Neither have enough invested. It won't be advocates, it won't be progressives, it won't be Democrats. I think it will be immigrants themselves, in the tradition of past civil rights struggles.
