NATIONAL ID CARD PROPOSAL BECOMES IMMIGRATION REFORM LIGHTNING ROD
Readers have already been discussing this subject in the comments. The usual positions on immigration won't necessarily define how people feel about a proposal to issue a national identification card to all authorized to work in the US. On the one hand, the immigration "law and order" types love the idea of a fool proof way go guarantee that all workers are legal. On the other side, civil liberties advocates are horrified by the "Big Brother" implications. Interestingly, the proposal is coming from liberal Democratic Senator Charles Schumer. And it's the privacy hawks in the GOP who are most likely going to try to strip out the proposal from an immigration reform bill. Here's an opinion piece on Foxnews.com explaining (presumably to conservatives) why they should oppose the concept.
