BAYH RETIREMENT COULD BE GOOD NEWS FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM

Rate this Entry
Today's news that Indiana Democratic Senator Evan Bayh will be retiring is probably bad news for much of the Democrat's legislative agenda. But when it comes to immigration, this is probably a good news day. Bayh's last vote on comprehensive immigration reform was a bad one. He voted with anti-immigration Senators to filibuster the 2007 version of comprehensive immigration reform and there is little reason to believe his vote in 2010 would be different. On the other hand, Senator Lugar, his Republican counterpart  from Indiana, is a much more likely vote in favor reform. Bayh may feel freer to vote his conscience this year now that re-election is not an issue. And it is possible, of course, that we'll get a Republican or Democratic replacement that will vote moderately on this issue. Time will tell.

BAYH RETIREMENT COULD BE GOOD NEWS FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM....as long as Dan Coats or Mitch Daniels get the GOP nomination and not John Hostettler...and of course Dems have to continue to hold the majority, and not allow Sessions to take over as the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

could the dems lost the senate as well as the house? is this a nightmare?
  3. George Chell's Avatar
Nightmare will come if Tommy Thomson challenges Russ Feingold or Dino Rosi challenges Patti Murray.

Right now, there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that a vote on Immigration will take place this year. In fact, most likely it won't.

I thought that Byah was somewhat of a moderate but I guess his record on Immigration does not support that, will see if there is some sort of effort on Immigration before his retirement only time will tell.

Greg, any news from your insider?

It is very interesting..the likely Dem Senate Candidate Brad Ellsworth is anti-immigration, while one of the GOP candidates, Dan Coats, is pro-immigration.
