ICE ANNOUNCES OVERHAUL OF DETENTION SYSTEM

Rate this Entry
Progress. From The Arizona Republic:

The moves described by John T. Morton, assistant secretary of Homeland Security for U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement, address oversight, medical care and tracking of
detainees at facilities in Arizona and across the country.

Plans include:

* Hiring 50 federal employees to oversee the largest detention facilities, which now are
largely run by contractors without much government oversight, Morton said.

* Assigning regional case managers to keep tabs on detainees with significant medical
problems to ensure they are getting proper care. Detainees with major problems will be
housed in facilities near hospitals and medical centers, Morton said.

* In June, launching an online immigrant-detainee locator so family members can easily find their relatives when they are in custody awaiting possible deportation

It the person is a CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ALIEN, Rather than spending more money on the sorry sack of hit, why not just deport them all together. We do not have the funds in our dewindling Social Services to treat them. Just give them a choice to be shot or go home.
I am tired of the bleeding hearts wanting to help with my tax dollars a Criminal illegal Aline. Frank Bowers

Nice. You sure told us folks on the Internet!

I'm not sure what a "criminal illegal Aline" is, but there's no such term in the Immigration and National Act, which governs immigration law in the U.S. However, if Frank's tax dollars are going to Alines, I think that should stop.

    Sigh.

Study after study after study has shown that immigrants, both legal and illegal, are a net GAIN to the US economy. They pay in billions of Social Security and Medicare taxes, helping to subsidize the costs of these programs for U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. They also fill many jobs and spend a huge amount of money in the US, again subsidizing the US through sale taxes and purchasing. Immigrants, both legal and illegal are LESS likely to commit crimes than native-born citizens of the U.S.

I would rather find a way to legalize most of these people, rather than continue blowing billions of MY tax dollars on deportation and detention. Those programs do nothing but subsidize government contractors and the private prison industry.

Brown hires, Emily Winterson, "the" Senator's immigration liaison. Brown says he almost cried when she said yes.

To those who don't know about the miracles Emily has worked, below is a 2005 Boston Globe write-up on her:

I'm not sure if AILA is actually going to sue or not, but they're clearly concerned about USCIS' now routine disregard for the Administrative Procedures Act. This is a serious problem and the agency now has moved to regulating by memo rather than the procedure required by the law. I very much hope the memo is challenged for this reason alone aside from the faulty logic that is the basis for the memo.
