ANTIS HOPING FOR GOP WIN IN MASSACHUSETTS

Rate this Entry

Massachusetts Republcian Scott Brown's web site has a pretty harsh position paper on immigration - the typical tea party-esque xenophobia one expects from the far right. All about enforcement and nothing about dealing with the millions of immigrants currently hear without status (other than deporting them all) or reforming our broken legal immigration system. Brown has been portraying himself as a moderate, but those in the Bay State who consider themselves pro-immigration should pay heed.

More telling is the ringing endorsement Brown got from anti-immigrant ALIPAC.

Hopefully, Brown will either lose or he's planning on taking a more moderate approach to the issue than he's letting on.

I am well aware of what the polls say but I will go out on a limb and predict that Brown will lose by a big margin. We will know the outcome in a few hours.

I do not like Coakley and think her actions in declaring her candidacy the day after the Senator died were in extremely poor taste and speaks volumes of her character, however, she is the lesser of two evils when the other option is Brown. The "Can" playbook seems to be to trumpet the polls in the hope of keeping the turnout low. That is the only hope they have of winning!

Should Brown win, as you say the prospects for CIR will considerably dim.

Correction: It was a week after the Senator died.

I do not think the dems can do anything!!! They have 60 votes and are still struggling to pass anything. The republicans under Bush passed a bunch of things with a simple majority.... the dems always shoot themselves in the foot!!! that is way they continue to disappoint...

the reality is that the Dems and who lead the immigration battles are a bunch of I....s (sorry for my french), this reform will never happen for 2 reason:
    1) they don`t want to do it but they appeal the latino vote
    2) they are a bunch of i....s.

MA will be in shock once they realise whom they have chosen. He will be nothing but another No vote.

In a way I am happy that likes of Dick Durbins(Hater of Indians) will have reduced power,

I am not sure if this is a true statement or not but it sure accomplishes nothing for immigration. Therefore I do not see why it would be good!!! We have to put all feelings a side and think in practical terms. Nobody but the antis benefit from this thing if it goes republican.

Dems will want a bill with out guest worker programs or no increase in EB green cards . This is Dem vision of reform , They just want to legalize their base. If they have fillibuster proof majority , they will not compromise .

I still think Dems dont have courage to bring the CIR to debate this year or before 2012.

A, au contraire, Dems have always been good to legal immigrants, both Eb and FB. Who do you think signed AC21 into the law (and what would you be doing without 7th year H1 extentions and green card portability)?

It was republican congress and democratic president that made AC21 possibile.

Well , Durbins hate of H1Bs (Indians) and love of Dream( mostly undocumented) speaks volumes.

I think this is the best thing that could happen for CIR. If Brown wins 1)most likely HCR won't pass 2) it will make democrats realize that are at risk of losing really big in 2010 unless: they energize their base... Obama knows that hispanics votes can be to several senate races and many house seats.
Furthermore, if Obama doesn't pass healthcare, he will need to make sure that he gets something done this year. Climate bill won't even be discussed this year. The only thing they can/will pass is financial regulation and CIR.
Note that having 60 democrats votes in the Senate is not key to passing CIR. We know that there are several republicans who will vote for CIR, so having Brown taking the seat doesn't diminish the CIR chances at all.

Heavy turnout reported. Dems have a 3 to 1 advantage over Reps in MA. As per conventional wisdom , this is good news for Dems. However there is also widespread rumours that Dems have crossed over this time and so have the independants to support Brown.

With all but one Democrat voting for AC21. Clinton had an ability to round 'em up, but given that it was a Rebublican congress it is pretty impressive that all but one Dems voted for it. You put the same bill on the table now, and 90% of Republcans will run the other way.

Last time I checked Dems are in control of two branches of government. Lets see if any immigration bill comes to the floor while these timid people are in charge.
