Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

REPORT: IMMIGRATION REFORM COULD ADD $1.5 TRILLION TO GDP OVER TEN YEARS

Rate this Entry

Professor Raul Hinojosa-Ojeda of UCLA (and a former Immigrant of the Day) has authored a major report that has been released by the Center for American Progress and the Immigration Policy Center that shows that fixing the country's immigration system could produce massive economic benefits for the US. The report shows the following:

This report uses a computable general equilibrium model to estimate the economic ramifications of three different scenarios: 1) comprehensive immigration reform that creates a pathway to legal status for unauthorized immigrants in the United States and establishes flexible limits on permanent and temporary immigration that respond to changes in U.S. labor demand in the future; 2) a program for temporary workers only that does not include a pathway to permanent status or more flexible legal limits on permanent immigration in the future; and 3) mass deportation to expel all unauthorized immigrants and effectively seal the U.S.-Mexico border. The model shows that comprehensive immigration reform produces the greatest economic benefits:

o Comprehensive immigration reform generates an annual increase in U.S. GDP of at
least 0.84 percent. This amounts to $1.5 trillion in additional GDP over 10 years. It also
boosts wages for both native-born and newly legalized immigrant workers.

o The temporary worker program generates an annual increase in U.S. GDP of 0.44 percent. This amounts to $792 billion of additional GDP over 10 years. Moreover, wages
decline for both native-born and newly legalized immigrant workers.

o Mass deportation reduces U.S. GDP by 1.46 percent annually. This amounts to $2.6
trillion in lost GDP over 10 years, not including the actual cost of deportation.2 Wages
would rise for less-skilled native-born workers, but would reduce wages for higherskilled
natives, and would lead to widespread job loss.

The message is clear - those arguing that legalization will hurt workers and hurt the country just aren't right on the facts.

At a time when people like Charles Grassley are trying to destroy the American economy, this report is timely!

I have a sick feeling that lack of job creation in December is due to a large number of jobs being moved abroad, particularly in manufacturing!

Can legalisation pay for healthcare for all americans ? The following op-ed on latimes believes so ..

These are the kind of ideas we need to come up with for a win-win for all, instead of all the useless oposition which takes us no where in solving serious issues.

    That was a nice op-ed.

Immigration reform done right does closes out loopholes in HC reform and even in anti-terrorism and energize the US economy.

It really is a win-win situation and that is why I think immigration reform should be the next top priority after Pres. Obama signs the HC reform bill.

IBM's 2009 layoff was total above 9,000 Microsoft's lay offs were over 6,000

Microsoft recieved 1,218 h1b visa for 2010 and IBM 695.

To report that these companies are hiring Americans is total fraud on the part of greedy lawyers who profit from displacement of American tech workers.

Further more IBM has announced that it plans to triple layoffs in 2010.

Indian outsourcing company Wipro received the most.

American economy has nearly 10 year cycle of job loss, to say this is going to suddenly change is fraud. Rather shocked at the shameful, offensive anti American rhetoric coming from lawyers who views are jaded by their greed and lust for money.

Currently India has %120 tax on car imports, they do not practice fair trade.

Also it is age discrimination to lay off every one over 45 to hire a cheap Indian. It is unconstitutional and immoral.

Microsoft and Bill Gates the worst offenders have sunk from No 1 Tech Company to now 3. Obviously the policy is not working. Unemployment is over %15. What sense does it make to bring in greenbacks with just a bachelor degree (not highly qualified just cheap)

Obviously this will make unemployment higher, and national debt hire.

Shame on you anti-American lawyer's and you spin based on the love of money instead of facts.

Hey Gary - How about including that part you sent me by email that you left out of your comment?

I said you talk like stereotypical Jew lawyer, which is slang for one who is blinded by greed and lust for money.

Gary - I think you are the perfect spokesman for your cause.

What is my cause? I have nothing against real Jews.

If you work for IMB and you're over 50 you have a 20% chance of layoff. Some how your perverted mind thinks this is good for America. How would you like to be laid off at 50? Because they could hire a cheap Indian who education was subsided by American tax payer? Would you enjoy not being able to provide for your family? The Torah does not teach this behavior.
Your not even following American constitution let alone Torah.

You're the perfect spokesman for your cause, greed, love of money, fraud, spin.

    Interesting.
The Garys of the world will now interpret religeous texts for everyone and decide who is "real". Sounds like the "purity" filter that DeMint wants.

"I said you talk like stereotypical Jew lawyer, which is slang for one who is blinded by greed and lust for money."

I don't see anything about "real" Jews in this sentence. Sounds like a broad brush steretypical slur to me. But then, I am not the one with the real "language skills" now, am I?

Pretty pathetic...the attempt to hide the slur behind a jumble of confused words.

No one supports age discrimination. If you stop Indians, the companies will still fire your 50 year old butt and hire young Americans (wonder where they will find them give the composition of the graduating classes). So if your issue is age, fight to address it and you will find support. Don't use it to hide behind your hatred for all things foreign though. American cars are selling aplenty in India. As is apparel, food and pop culture. Without the world at large many more US companies would have been bankrupt and jobs lost. Get on your knees and thank your "superior" Lord for those gullible "furriners".
