AFRICAN-AMERICANS AND IMMIGRATION REFORM

Rating: 2 votes, 5.00 average.
New York Times religion reporter Samuel G. Freedman wrote an interesting article over the weekend on efforts in the pro-immigration community to reach out to African-Americans largely through the enlistment of support from African-American clergy. Some in the anti-immigrant camp have sought to sew the seeds of division by trying to convince African-Americans that immigrants are unfair competitors for jobs. The goal is to put a human face on immigration and focus on common bonds between the Latino and African-American communities.

Greg writes: 'Some in the anti-immigrant camp have sought to sew the seeds of division by trying to convince African-Americans that immigrants are unfair competitors for jobs.'

    From the New York Times:
"We get 'They're taking our jobs,' " said Gerald Lenoir, director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, recalling his conversations at churches.

Sounds like they don't need much convincing. They have plenty of direct experience or at least heard about displacement, depressed wages, discrimination, unionized jobs with benefits now subcontracted out. Is Greg implying that an illegal alien has just as much right to a scarce job as an American citizen?

Here's what's happening in the real world:

According to Manuel Pastor, director of the program for environmental and regional equity at USC, African Americans in the South L.A. neighborhood have to battle discrimination in applying for work, as well as compete with newly arrived Latinos for scarce jobs. Areas such as Watts and Compton are now majority Latino, he said.

That can be a disadvantage to African Americans who aren't plugged into the tight networks many immigrants use to find employment, Pastor said. The national unemployment rate for African Americans in November was 15.6%, nearly double that of whites.

Jack, well, your problem is that African Americans have developed a very good "nose" for the rasist rats, like you. They, like most, do not understand a lot about politics or economics of immigration, but there is no doubt they understand what it is all about when they see a bunch of white hicks with guns that hate Hispanics. And that's when their "I smell a rat" alarm goes off. Bottom line is that African Americans are a lot more open to immigration reform than whites, and it is not going to change any time soon.

On the other hand, the AA women have power to end racism in this country. Instead of complaining about shortage of black men, if these women married African men in large numbers and brought them and their families to this country, whites would become a minority by 2030. It is however not going to happen. First, very few AA women date African men...a status issue. More white women in this country are married to African men than AA women married to African men. Secondly, if more AA women marry African men, fewer African men will get visa to the enter the US..for the same reasons that Thai and Filipiina women are denied visas...intending immigrant, racism, xenophobia etc...and believe me there are many racist consular officers who would rather give visas to terrorists over folks intending to marry Americans...one of them now works for CIS.
